LaLD was the enabler. It was already a loud enough voice in DT way before even th e Univision years and was putting out both self-posts AND big write-ups with the sort of balance that can turn a hobby blogger into a gig writer for other things. To think it was about scale-model cars!

As for jminer...I’m finally in! And holy crepe it feels like home. So much more powerful an editor and saves full-res uploads as a link to boot, which means the world to me given how DT tends to crop photos. I love it already, and with the iterative development, it can only get better.

Will I still want one place — tha t which we call opposite-lock ? Yes. Will Oppo on DT still work ? Yes. I reckon at least it can be the reader’s digest thread where the greatest hits can go. The problem is fragmentation. The solution is just have those who want both to get both.

In all honesty, without Oppo I have very little reason to visit Kinja. I do enjoy the articles from David and Jason ( Mercedes as well). However, a good portion of the reason for reading the articles is also reading the comments and getting other people’s take on the subject. Sadly the comments on Jalopnik are getting more and more toxic. Couple that with the garbage that shows up in the side bar and it will drive me (and many others I’m sure) away.

For the people here who write big articles, the wider exposure of DT may be an attraction. A few here have gone on to be hired at G/O and if Oppo was on DT, Oppo writers might have a chance to go on to bigger and better too.

Oppo has normal turnover and DT provides a source of new blood.

DT provides free server space.

OTOH, if the big writers here hate the DT UI, I feel those people’s opinions should have more weight.

Just a few thoughts.

Yes, using DT as a best of oppo type system would work pretty well for everyone. Long pieces get a chance at a larger audience, and day to day post stick to the site best suited to it(oppo-)

Which is why I want the new site to not only succeed, but to also have a cooperative symbiotic relationship that resembles classic Oppo from th e early ‘10s. I’ve always thought that Oppo was at its best when it can shitpost AND be a legit engaging blog AND accost the writers for inconsistencies along with calling out management woes as well as help them resolve rifts be tween audience and publication AND be a general car, bike and other adv ice forum. Treat it like an audience union.

Very good point - agree completely.

I may be fearful about an solo site getting lost in the internet. There’s security in combining with a site with bigger resources.

Then again, the CEO’s behavior is much like the first date - he’s on his absolute best behavior. We don’t yet know his true character.

That’s sortof what I am thinking....we use ‘The Hyphen’ as it’s now being called (i.e. Jminer’s opposite-lock.com site) as ‘Home’ and any long-form posts that get a lot of really good comments and feedback there could be re-posted to DriveTribe :)

Keep trying, it’s in alpha testing atm and works quite well once you’re in, but registration and emails are quite glitchy atm....just keep trying and you’ll get in! :)

We end up where ever the larger pool of community is. If DT gets mobile publishing down it won’t be that bad, if the hyphen gets remodeled to a blog format (something about Nick having a go at the coding?) Then its got a real chance too. Oppo being used as a jump point for serious journalism ties back into, if we can turn forum code into a blog
