We formed TEAM OPPOSITELOCK on Easter Sunday, 2020. Since then, out of more than 250,000 teams, TEAM OPPOSITELOCK has climbed to Number 233 in the overall ranking. Personally? I think that’s very impressive.
Folding@home is distributed computing. Stanford University has some really huge computations that they are running to find cures for COVID, Parkinson’s and some other diseases and they divvy up the computational work and we do the calculating at home. Turns out the butt-kicking gaming GPUs do the best work. If you are interested in contributing to the effort, visit www.foldingathome.org and get started. It’s super-easy. I can assist you with basic setup if you need it, and others here are very expert. Also, there is a TEAM OPPOSITELOCK Official Team Sticker that I will mail you upon completion of your first work unit...

My system is offline until later today, did a little bit of cleaning and forgot to turn it back on before leaving for work this morning. So have fun catching up! Also I think once I hit 500 million, I will be taking it down for a few days and giving it a good cleaning and redoing my fan setup and installing 3 more fans and some better dust filtering.

I have my brontosaurus Precision T7400 workstation plugged in at the local high schoool, where Mrs. Vandura works, and where there is a very large solar panel array and I’m using their electrons. I have a 1080ti card that I bought and it’s dedicated to folding. I’m hoping that with the razing of our Kinja home, I can drum up some more interest. My ultimate hope was to see us in the top 100 teams.
Have you explored Drive Tribe at all yet? It would be ironic if Oppo people went there and began subscribing and DT get the money instead of Kinja.

Word of note, the latest Covid moonshot sprint (round #5) is effective Nov 6, meaning some WUs may produce higher than nominal PPD. A nice consolation to the never ending trickle of cancer units.

I have a little bit since I came on here this morning and saw all the stuff about Oppo going away. I don’t know if my posts are ever that goo or anything , but I might make a go at it and see what happens. I haven’t announced my latest purchase yet, 100PercentJake knows of it, but I haven’t shared it here yet, so I might make the move over to DT and announce it.
I wish I had access to that kind of setup, unfortunately if it isn’t natural gas or oil Oklahoma hates it, so not a lot of solar here. But I’m still rocking just my 2080 Ti, if I install my 1080 Ti back in with it, it will have to be a lot cooler in the house or go into my garage haha.

You are a total F@h nerd! I want to set up a second machine and GPU, but spending too much money on other goodies right now... I’m steady at 1.5-1.6M PPD and something like 9th place on the team behind people that I’ll never catch.
We’ve got to keep this thing going while Oppo colonizes some other planet.

So you are going to add a bigger CPU to the garage? If you’re thinking of whispering something down the road and would consider offering a Friends and Oppo price on it, I’ll organize a box for it and run it at the high school with the other one. Free electrons and it’ll be dedicated entirely to folding. I don’t game at all, unless you count Sudoku on my cell phone.

I would possibly be moving the whole system out to the garage if I install the 1080 Ti back in, the 2080 Ti creates a fair bit of heat itself, so having both in the same system would probably run a lot hotter.

And I’m currentl
y in the process of selling off some of my excess computer stuff to a friend, but I’ll keep my eye out for something I can build cheap and powerful.

I actually damaged my laptop battery running F@h at high setting... So I had to buy a new battery and laid off the crunching... I may fire it up again though for the chance to be part of the t eam when we pass Apple...

Interesting. I’ve been doing some testing and completed a couple of Work Units on slower laptops. One WU takes like three days...

yes I have, already signed up.
I have a ‘16 Dell 7559 , it’s an i5 6300hq with a 4GB GTX 960m. The power supply is only 130 watts, so when it’s running full power it pulls from the battery as well. W eeks of running at 100% every night and much of the day actually melted the shrink cover over the battery control board and eventually blew the thermal fuse entirely instead of just cycling it on and off, which would shift it over to AC adaptor only and throttle performance until the thermal fuse reset, then crank on the battery again. I’m kind of impressed with the thermal management for the CPU and GPU on this machine, it never thermal throttled, just power throttled until the battery gave up.
It’s old enough that I’m looking at new machines, but I want to buy a PS5 this year and two gaming devices aren’t in my budget. It still runs most of the games I play on PC acceptably at 1080p, and is more than adequate for the non-gaming uses I put it t o.

I really good card for folding is the GeForce 1650 Super. It’s less than 100 (89w, by some accounts) watts and specifically designed for more modest machines. But it also folds very well for what it is. I own two of them in the machines I run at home. In a side-by-side comparison, the 1650 Super is the most PPD/$ and the most PPD/watt. Best buy in both categories if you’re not trying to create the fastest machine on the block. And did I mention that it’s also a very respectable gaming card? Really good bang for the buck.

I like laptops. I haven’t owned a non-portable that wasn’t an SBC in almost 15 years.

Just joined the club. Daytime temps here have dropped below 60F so I received permission from management (wifey) to fire up ye olde space heater - an AMD Phenom II from 2010 and its GTX 1 070.

What’s your F@h user name? Once you complete your first work unit you’ll show up on the team member list. I can mail you an Official Sticker.
