No update, still crashed. Some pictures of my greatest oppo hit: road trip across six states with no brakes.

It will rise again.

No brakes?

Increasingly sketchy brakes. Replaced master when I got home. # years on I can admit, no brakes.  That’s how I found out how fast one can take corners in a corvair. Parking brake works good.

I’m appalled. That could have ended badly for someone else on the road at the wrong time.

I’ll backtrack on my hyp erbolic statement: Brakes became increasingly unbalanced and would lock the right rear under heavy braking, so I had to plan stopping farther back to avoid weird squatting and rear engine handling dynamics.  It had brakes when I left and has them now.   But I do like to say I drove across the coutry with no brakes, it part of the sad tale of the corvair, if not necessarily true.

That is one of the coolest Oppo stories I recall. Until the beastie (elk IIRC?) got in the way.

Hope it rises again soon!

Thay was an amazing trip to watch. I look forward to seeing it rise again, wherever we all end up.

just like they came out of the factory!

Heh.  I’m lusting for a Monza Coupe myself these days.  Seeing yours has me back on the Search Engines again this AM.  Thanks for the memories!

I daily’d this guy for a year. Very fun car to cruise around in. There’s a guy in Phoenix who owns five or so along with a shed full of parts. He used to give me parts for free. There’s a Corvair graveyard eat of Phoenix in Apache Junction. He almost always has a couple for sale at CP prices. I bought mine from a kid in Tempe for $500 as he had no idea how to work on it. I want another one.

Wow. Missed that before. It must be the Apache Junction guy’s cars I see turning up on the Tucson CL searches.

There was a gorgeous ‘65 Monza coupe, nicely restored, out in San Diego last year. I thought he wanted too much for it, but have kicked myself ever since for not going after it harder.  He’d put it on IROC wheels, with a not-quite-midnight-black exterior-- and a contrasting silver in that accent panel on the back.  It was a stunning combination.

Yeah, it was about six years ago. Sold it for a couple of vintage motos.
