Teaching America Geography Again(TM)
Before N ovember, 58.325% of East-Coasters couldn’t identify Nevada on a US map and 63.42% of North-W esterners couldn’t tell Georgia from A labama in blind taste tests. Who knew elections could be educational?

I’d imagine the people who lack geography knowledge are also the people who don’t follow politics, much if at all.
In 9th-grade, they had us draw maps of the US and our city from memory, which was a fun exercise, but lowered my opinion of many of my new classmates considerably.

I had occasion recently to talk to a young lady (early 20s) from California who had no idea where DC is. I pressed her and she conceded that its “like, in the northeast, somewhere”.
Also, I believe our current situation should be indication enough that lack of knowledge doesn't deter people from participating in politics.

Know what else teaches US geography? Road trips! Drive more, learn more.

A recruiter from a major company (a Name You’d Know, withheld to protect the guilty) had to ask me where Missouri was. She was in California and asked if Missouri was on the east coast, so I guess at least she knew it was east of California?
This company not only operates nationwide, they have facilities for multiple lines of business IN Missouri . You’d think that somebody who is specifically charged with being the first point of contact would at least take a minute to see what regional market I’d be covering since the job involved travel .

On the Northeast Corridor I guess, but yeah...
I don’t subscribe to the idea that the Mason Dixon line is a reasonable delimiter between North and South these days, but I certainly don’t think you can say DC is in the North (I’d go Mid-Atlantic)

Agreed. Vi rginia is definitely a lot different than it was even a few decades ago, let alone the 1860s.

I’d also guess from the last few days that America isn’t very good at math and counting, either.

I blame it on the lowering of our standards as a nation. We think patriotism is standing up for the flag but not about
understanding
what the stars and stripes actually are there for. Educational standards have lowered and we also
don’t teach civics in schools anymore to the detail they use to
. I see what they teach my kids and it’s embarrassing how little t
hey teach kids in public schools these days.
