This is nearly a s***post as I have no real contribution to make here, but I was just thinking to how I had spent 2018-2019 and, well, ....good Lrd I miss my previous life...

This was 2018:

Kinja'd!!!

Stopped in NV, UT, NM, TX(3) , KS, ND, SK, BC(2) , then back into the U.S. for stops in WA and OR before returning to Sonora, CA for the winter.

This was 2019 (almost) :

Kinja'd!!!

I made it as far as my stay in Maine and then changed plans and booked it to Houston (because reasons), and that’s where I am now. On t his trip, I stayed in lower CA(2) , AZ, TX(2) , MS, TN, MI, ON, QC, NS, and then back to the U.S. in ME.

Made this decision to be here in Houston, which from the get-go wasn’t panning out super great, then pandemic which TOTALLY ruined the primary ‘big plan’ I had for being in this city at all, so now I’m just here...just... being.

Good memories, though. Best two years of my life.

Glad I’m not the only one who just feels like I’m somewhere...being...right now.

With no travel at all since March I’m feeling very very cooped up. And it’s not like we can just start planing next years big vacation either because for all we know COVID will be worse next June than it is now.

COVIDs got me straight pissed off. We have a big list of places we want to go and feel like we can’t safely go to any of them.

Next on the list is L.A.,    PCH, Redwoods. I’ve never been farther west than Denver.

Yeah, I’ve been really trying not to think about the past, because its just too damn depressing. And I’m sick of all the “we’ve moved that awesome thing you were going to go to online, its virtual now, hurray!” stuff. I get it, you’re trying, its probably better than nothing, but virtual is not reality, its a cheap imitation of it.

And then Kinja comes along wanting to take away my biggest window to the world outside the few blocks of campus I walk every day. CURSE YOU HERBS!

AND CURSE YOU COVID! What a profoundly sucky year, and I don’t even have it that bad compared to millions of others out there.

Strongly resonate with this. Set myself up to travel long term and then shit hit the fan. But also like you said, some of the best moments of my life. If you want to read/see more, I did a little write up and photo dump a few months back.

Here’s a rough outline of my trip.

Completely agree . My world being reduced to my house, a weekly (or so) trip to my in-laws, a very occasional trip to the lab (which I am about to lose entirely), and annoying errands is killing me inside ... When the world opens back up, there won’t be anywhere to go, either, because everything will have closed forever.

I’m not even using “when” at this point. The only way things open back up is if Jesus himself comes down from his castle on the M oon and waves his magic wand to make COVID completely disappear, which isn’t going to happen. The virus is endemic now, its as permanent and as prevalent as the common cold, it will be with us forever, so all these restrictions will have to last forever in some fashion.

Somewhat like what I said about it early on: It’s a coronavirus, which many common colds are, and we’ve never had a vaccine for one because they mutate rapidly. Our only hope is to contain and eradicate it before it has time to mutate enough to be impossible to develop a vaccine to combat. Now the only play that will ever bring normalcy is doing what naturally happens : Let it burn through the population so it mutates enough to becomes less dangerous. The worst mutations kill hosts too fast and die out, while the least dangerous ones proliferate, ultimately joining the long list of colds we could get.

Holy crap, that’s an incredible trip.

I miss other places. I co-drove with a friend up to his parents’ house near Lake Erie last month, though, to save him the flight and that was super needed. I’ve been driving around in the state and camping out a bit, too.

It’s the f irst year in a while that I haven’t left the country, and I hate it. I’m so over this stupid pandemic and the fact that people still don’t take it seriously.

I’m also in the “very angry at this crap” category. I’m so sick of it. COVID-19 nuked every job I was in the running for. E verything went on hold. Every. Single. One. I was finally starting to see some openings that were what I hoped to find, too. I’m so over all of this that it’s ridiculous. The longer it drags out, the less plausible it seems that I’ll actually get a damn job that pays worth a damn for my level of experience anytime within this century.

I realized the other day that I’m not even going for drives anymore. It’s like my resolve has been so broken that I forget I can go isolate in my car out on the road for a couple hours. Then I see restaurant parking lots full and I kinda  just want to punch people...

:(

I recommend driving out of civilization, to be honest. The full restaurants make me angry, too. Just wildly irresponsible.

My Clubman isn’t the roomiest (and I’m generally not one for camping) , but perhaps I should grab a pile of blankets and just boogie away from the city for at least a night; that could be good.
