From time to time I need to restart my phone (lost reception etc) As soon as I restart it, I get a spam call. Same number every time. I have it blocked, but I am curious how it’s happening. I ran malwarebytes to see if there is any malware/spyware. Nothing found.
Anyone have similar issue? Find out what it was?
At this point I suspect Verizon has sold my name to the devil. I don’t think it’s any app I installed.

If you can reliably reproduce it (easy enough to test) and it happens every time you restart, I’d take it to a Verizon store and show them. That’s truly bizarre.

Is it Verizon calling to confirm activation of your SIM?

There is a good chance it’s even worse.
Is the number a “local to you” number?
I notice these SPAM calls will randomly crop up once I turn my phone on in a new area as I travel— often right after I make my first call after getting off the airplane or stepping out of the car.
The carriers got their chops busted over doing this— but I think they are selling not just your personal info but also the location-based data out of your phone. I notice, oddly, that the SPAMMers have enough info on your phone being “on” and “in a certain location” to hit you with a locally-referenced area code to convince you to pick up.
It’s ugly and insidious. It should be illegal, but the carriers and Google and FB all have figured out how to make money from this crap.

Have you tried reproducing the behavior without a data connection available ? Meaning n o wifi and mobile data disabled, but within cell coverage so a voice call would still come through.

I forget now who is calling, but it’s spam. Something like a reminder that my car warranty is about to expire on my c5. Should I renew?

It’s amazing to me they know when my phone is restarted. I guess there is some signal initiation they can use... but it’s fascinating to me.
Mean while, my local chevrolet dealer can’t schedule me in for saturday to drop my car off.. because they don’t do the kind of work I need on saturdays.

Try rebooting your phone into safe- mode and see if the same thing happens.

Yeah, both systems actually have a Ping-Response system upon the Subscriber Module being initialized. Obviously part of that is to register with local cell towers and part of it is to let the carrier know how to route a call.
The part where it goes in the weeds is VZW and ATT monetizing that information by selling it to all comers. There was a consent decree on this horseshit, btw, but it’s too lucrative and they have buildings full of lawyers happily skirting the law.

That’s good practice. Google can triangulate you based on local SSIDs... and the GPS is actually ON, despite “Location Based Services” claiming it’s off.
It all sucks. I still want to fund a company to do a “clean, no BS” Linux-based cellphone. Duck-Duck-Go Phone...

You used to be able to get a Blackp hone, but it looks like they ditched the hardware and went app based now.
