Gotta Have It Green!
Before Kinja shuts Oppo down, I’ve decided to go ahead and hit Publish on a bunch of my old drafts that I never got around to completing. Some of these are going to be a little rough, so be prepared for unfinished rambling trains of thought, run-on and dead-end sentences, and lazily pasted comments that I meant to expand upon.
We’re human; sometimes we use the words want and need interchangeably when there’s something we just gotta have. But those words have two very separate meanings, and no matter the size of your budget, hard choices must still be made.
Things are hardly ever perfect in the used car market. There’s always something
You’ll find cars in every shape imaginable, you’ll often see vehicles that “need the seats reupholstered” on account of some cracked leather, or “need repainted” due to fading.
It’s just exaggerated semantics, isn’t it? Like saying you LOVE pizza, or HATE the word moist ? Of course one doesn’t NEED to see the latest hit movie. Of course one doesn’t NEED another beer. These are just things we say when the want is strong, right?
Sometimes I look at a scuff mark where my seat belt receiver has been rubbing against the center console and start to think that I need a new one. Woah, woah, waitaminute. Need? No, you don’t need a new console
At the most basic level, our human needs are needs of survival. We cannot live without maintaining our basic bodily functions. We gotta eat. We gotta breathe. We gotta sleep.
Cars have basic needs too. They have to have a power/fuel source. The drivetrain has to function. The steering has to work. The brakes have to be able to stop the car. And all these things need to happen without the car falling apart.
But just as man cannot live on bread alone, there’s more to a competently functional automobile than just getting the wheels moving. It has to be properly equipped to handle its habitat. A daily driver needs exterior lighting. A drag car needs a rollcage. An off-roader needs extra ground clearance.
Beyond this, I think we begin to enter a grey area.
Paint is one of those wonderful things that serves a dual purpose. It protects metal against corrosion while enhancing the vehicle’s appearance. Win-win. While you could say that paint is superfluous, the importance of keeping rust at bay cannot be ignored. But what if paint on a plastic bumper cover gets chipped? Does that constitute a necessary repair? No. But it can stay on the to-do list while the more important priorities are addressed.
In the end, I think it comes down to a simple equation: the car needs x in order to y . A good battery is needed to start the engine. A fresh coat of wax is needed before taking it to the show.
