Spent some more time wandering today, drove to Vincennes, Indiana where Abe Lincoln left his formative childhood behind and crossed the Wabash to Illinois. Sure, Illinois can claim to be the “Land of Lincoln” but we know where he actually learned his core values.

Just a few odds and ends. I saw three Roadmasters in rapid succession, only one of which appeared to be functional. No idea what the brown rusty wag on below might be. And I’m fairly confident I’ve never seen a helicopter mounted like that at a VFW before.

Homeward bound tomorrow, probably not much dirt road wandering on the way back so I can catch the end of early voting tomorrow. Indianapolis unexpectedly opened up Lucas Oil Stadium this weekend  to accommodate the demand.

This block of stylish apartments is right next to Vincennes University, and I assume they’re not usually mostly empty during the school year. 2020.

Doris 19's ride is an Aspen or Volare. I’d be shocked if another Oppo can’t identify which.

Belt line trim says Aspen, going solely on your images. Maybe the bumper overriders on the Doris19mobile offer confirmation.

I’ve never been in one of these, even when they were fairly new, that wasn’t rusting so quickly it was damn near audible. They fared much worse than some of their contemporaries against road salt.

Yep, when I zoom in on the original I can see what looks like the Volare badge. Good call.

Well, I thought it was the Volare badge, and it probably is, but the Aspen has a similar (at that crappy resolution) badge so dunno.

Aspen. Body side mo lding for Volare is different. Volare side molding goes under side marker lights, Aspen side molding encompasses side marker lights.

Volare:

Aspen:

It’s funny to compare pics and see what a badge-job the Aspen-Volare twins were.  I wonder if even the VINs can tell a Dodge from a Plymouth in that era.

It’s funny how identical the two are...

I’d be surprised if a few didn’t get out with “mixed badging”.

I once saw a new Chevrolet Yukon XL at the local GMC dealer. It was a Chebby on the left side and a GMC on the right...

As I said to SBA, just before you posted.

What terrible cars.

I’ve been hearing stories like that about both GM & Chrysler for years. Nice to read one that wasn’t a 5th hand anecdote, for a change.

The placement of the tailgate badges makes me think Aspen, in addition to the trim strips along the sides.

Missed it due to looking for photos of brown Volare/Aspen wagons to use for reference.

I did not hate the Volare Sport Wagon.

Eh, I guess that’s about as good as they got. But they shoulda ditched the roof rack on the Sportwagon!

I believe that the manual transmission with 318 V8 was still available on the wagon, the 360 V8 was only available with an automatic.   Roof rack was an option.

Oh, it was painful for the dealer, too, since it was a highly sought option combo— he had buyers lined up to take the truck at Full Retail... but he could not sell the damn thing until they “special ordered” the right emblems and badges to make it the GMC it was supposed to be.

They even had it locked up in a service bay away from prying eyes.  Absolutely true story.

Heh.  My wife’s a shrink and I always tell her not to pull that “borderline” shit on me...  “I can play either side of the line.  I’m the John McEnroe of OCD.”

I would absolutely drive a factory mis-badged truck like that, but want a discount for doing so.

They actually had problems on the assembly line, cars getting badged as Aspen on one fender and Volare on the other. Anyone who thinks Chrysler has shit quality now would probably have had an aneurism back in the 70s.

I don’t remember those, specifically; I can only think of one guy I knew who owned a Dart. I feel like I spent more time in & around the Aspen/Volare twins.
