Just a reminder that 4x4 prices are out of control.

Not even an Arizona XJ is worth 10k with the 4-cylinder engine and 2WD. A stick doesn’t make that any less CP.

I hope your Friday evenings are more entertaining than mine, as I taunt myself yet again with manual XJs I won’t buy.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Update : this is more like it. 4L, manual, 4wd, lifted, well-maintained XJ for less than $7k. Still a heck of a lot of money for an XJ, but at least it’s a good one.

Things I have just learned because of you:

- they still had the 2.5L all the way 2000
- people are still stupid

They kept the 2.5L around for the Wrangler through 2002, then replaced it with a 2.4L “PowerTech” 4-cylinder I know nothing about for the remaining TJ years.

If you want a cheap TJ, a 4 cylinder engine is about the only way to find one.

The pitman arm to steering box nut does not look properly torqued (185 ft lb) in this photo.

After take away food, have watched crappy TV, spent a few minutes practicing guitar, then watched enjoyable Bad Obsession Motorsports episodes 4 and 5 of the Bargain Racement series. Very enjoyable.

Now to either plan for ( hopefully) camping in a week, or to browse supercharged BRZs for sale. I’ll probably do a bit of both.

You can be the judge of whether that is a more entertaining evening than yours . Good luck with the continued hunt.

That is an impressive level of attention to detail. You should drop the seller a note.

Don’t forget, Mandalorian season 2 (1st episode) dropped today, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Camping sounds fun, but I have to admit, I’m much more enjoying this cabin I’m renting. So much simpler than camping (refrigerator! stove!).

Did you ask for a discount for your favorite Jeep writer on Oppo while you were at it?

No, no, don’t tempt me. I actually placed a deposit on a WJ Thursday; when I’m back in town next week I should be buying it.

Probably. Maybe.

I’m very wishy washy, but I’m ready for this, finally.

I think.

I would watch that if I had Apple TV. I’m not willing to find someone who will share a password, though, and I’m not getting another subscription.

We like grabbing a cabin for longer stays, but all of them in the area that we prefer are booked or overpriced/too big for the upcoming weekend .

I even looked at Outdoorsy trailer rentals, but only a couple were small enough to be pulled by the Outback, and none had propane heaters for boondocking, which i s the point of going into the woods for me. I’m going to the woods, and if it can’t be heated this time of year, I might as well tent and have a nimble vehicle.

Huh, I’d never heard of Outdoorsy. Thanks, need to poke around.

(Also: Disney+, not Apple TV.)

A deposit???  That’s good news, perhaps......

Sounds like cold feet to me.

The great part about it is the market is very good for WJs. If you don’t feel it is what you really want, someone will snatch it up quickly.

I looked at 3 last week: private sale, dealer, and car lot. The private sale has already dropped another $500 to 2k, which is tempting but I got some mildly weird vibes from the seller, and the last title transfer doesn’t show up in either Carfax or Autocheck, so I’m probably staying away from it.

(Plus it was filthy inside both in photos and in person, which ugh.)

The dealer doesn’t give a crap, and there were some suspicious groans out of the Jeep as I took it on a test drive. Wonder if there’s some rust I didn’t spot, or metal fatigue? Dunno. Shame, because it’s a nice color.

The WJ I put the deposit on is white, which ugh ugh ugh. But they have taken the time to make sure it’s in good shape: replaced leaky engine gaskets, replaced the struts front and back, and hopefully have fixed the brutally stiff transfer case shifter. I’ll find out early next week.

If they fix it to your liking you’re taking it?

Or, are you still assessing the way you really feel about it?

Yeah, it is interesting. I suppose I could look for a small van with propane heat, but was trying to keep it simple. I ran into Outdoorsy again when I saw an article on a trailer, then searched on it trying to find the manufacturer and found it available for rent. It would be great if it had a propane heater.

It’s more a question of price. They’re asking 5k, which is 2-3k more than mediocre examples , and about 1k more than I want  to pay for it.

So, I get to practice my rusty haggling skills. I’ve only bought 5 cars, ever, so this will be an adventure.

I have bought fo rty or so....... and helped so many others. I’m not sure that qualifies for anything, but I have done generally well . I’ve only been kicked out of a few dealerships...... :/

And now I’m researching whether to buy a portable heater and rent that trailer after all. However, it IS supposed to be warm again next weekend, so tenting will probably be fine.

David Tracy clearly made this post specifically for you and you’re still here talking about other Jeeps? The Greatest Jeep Grand Cherokee Ever Has Been For Sale For Months And We’re All Fools For Not Buying It

And why? Just because you like Jeeps that are actually the model you are looking for, or aren’t about to have their roof rust through, or that haven’t suspiciously been for sale forever?
