I have my eye on a few rim options for my truck... it’s hard to get decent tires in my stock size any more. So I plan to step up to 17" or 18". And I really don’t like many of the options available aftermarket, so realistically I’m looking at factory take offs. I’d love a set of ZQ8 18's but $$ $ and scarce.
Option #1. 2009 Sierra rims. 7.5" x 17", which would fit just fine. However, my rims have a center bore of 101MM and these are about 79MM.
- Thoughts on boring these out? I know it’s been done, but you can never get a straight answer from forums on the safety of stuff like this. It’s all just “go for it it’ll look cool bro”.
Option #2. These will fit perfectly. 7.5" x 17", same as the rims above, but with a 113MM center bore. And obviously don’t come with tires, so they’d be more expensive in the end.
- I know the GM rims are lug-centric like mine, however I have no idea about the TRD’s. Will the larger center bore be any issue?
- Obviously I don’t have a Toyota, however these are some of the nicest rims I’ve found available. Does anybody know of somebody making aftermarket center caps for stuff like this?
And lastly, would someone be able to photoshop those options onto this lovely vehicle?
Thanks y’all in advance

You’re having a hard time finding all terrain tires in 16" ?

What's your stock size? I found a bevy of options when looking for 16" tires for my Jeep.

235/75r16. Point me at them and I’ll give them a look, I’ve been known to look past things staring me directly in the face.
It’s snow tires in particular that are the problem really. What I WANT are Blizzaks. I had some. Don’t make that size anymore. I know X-Ice are good. Not available. The highest rated tire I found available last time I was shopping was Hankook IPike... they’re shit. I can’t wait to burn them off.

I “bored out” some explorer take offs to fit on my grand marquis using a router and rabbit bit. The process did not go well. Unless you have access to a big ass mill I would not recommend this as a diy. In the end I made it work but it isn’t to my standards. The factory wheels on my Colorado could have had less backspace so maybe a small 1/2 spacer to clear the lip for the factory wheels might be enough and just look better in general?

Less the A/T’s (so I may keep these for my summer tires—I like the look, and it would save me having to get them remounted twice a year) and more snow tires. At least in anything good. Blizzaks, X-Ice aren’t around. IPike was the best tire available the last time I shopped around... they’re crap and I can’t wait to get rid of them. Unfortunately they wear a lot slower than the Blizzaks I had so I’ve got them for at least this winter.

I wouldn’t be a
DIY job for me, I’ve got a shop around the corner that can have the job if I go that way. More just thinking of structural integrity.
I don’t want to do spacers unless I absolutely have to.

Actually, just checked Tire Rack... there’s 16 results, total, for my size. 4 of them are A/T’s and there’s no snow tires at all.

Integrity of the wheels wouldn't be impacted at all by a professional job. This would be so easy for a well equipped shop.

You can get the blizzak dm-v2 in 245/75r16 or 245/70r16 both would make negligible changes to your speedo. Assuming you’ve got a rim wide enough for a 245

Sweet. I might just do that... both the wheels and the shop are close by, and $800 for rims and tires is pretty damned good...

6.5"... not sure what that means in reality . The only resource I could find say 235 is already too wide, which just seems incorrect.

Shrug emoji... they are. I can still find A/T’s for summer, though choices are limited, but a quick Tire Rack search reveals precisely 0 options for snow tires.

I can’t find it in me to disagree with you, I like what you’ve done there.
I wouldn’t mind doing steelies honestly except for the weight. Put some vintage (ish) rims on and call it good.

I’ve had center bores enlarged on wheels before. It works fine, and is the kind of thing that is even cheaper if you take them to the local machine shop of your choice with a bit of cash and are clear you’re not in a hurry or concerned with getting an invoice. I’ve paid $100 cash for a set when I needed it done. Also, they’ll need the wheels sans any tires.

I think 245 is pretty wide for a 6.5" rim. They sell a 225/75r16 which is a -2% change in diameter

4Runner wheels are actually a 106mm bore and 17"x7", not 7.5". The TRD Off Road/Trail wheels are 7.5". FN Wheels makes a knock off of those wheels with a generic center cap, they are 17" x 8".

245 width tires are significantly more common, and I doubt a 1cm wider tire is gonna cause clearance issues for you.

:(
Though if it’s a grand all in for rims and tires after unmounting and remounting (asking $ 800 for the set), that gets me a new set of rims for winter tires I can actually get, and a new set of summers at the same time. Not too bad.

Eh... I never actually thought about going smaller, but that’s an idea. For winter tires narrower isn’t exactly a bad idea anyways... at least for snow. Ice is a different matter. But then, on ice I’m probably fucked anyways...

Clearance isn’t an issue, 235's are pretty narrow. Bigger issue is they’re 6.5" wide, and the only reference I’ve found so far says that’s pretty narrow even for 235's. Though TBH that sounds at least 2/5ths BS to me

Not sure studs are legal in my area. If they’re just stud ready and not actually installed, HELL YES NOKIANS.
They didn’t have anything available last time I looked, and the way options had been disappearing I didn’t think anything new would be cropping up, so I didn’t even look for them. Gonna snoop their site and see what else they’ve got in 235/75/16 now.

Well, it’s a small cheap truck released in 2004, so there’s that. But then they updated the rims in 2008/9ish to fit bigger brakes so no excuses...

I know they’ve got a fantastic reputation, and that price is better than I ever hoped, even considering US exchange... frankly all they’ve got to do at that price is outperform Hankook. Shouldn’t be much of a task.

Find a place that sells Nokian/Nordman tires and get these:
Also of note, you could also get 245/70R16 as a substitute. I checked on a tire size calculator and the circumference is only 1.3% smaller.... not enough of a difference to matter much.
And when you switch to that size, the tire options increase greatly.
For one thing, one of the best winter tires becomes an option:
I hate it how companies sometimes make the OEM tire size some weird thing that isn’t common. The Honda Fit Sport has the same problem. When replacing tires on my car, instead of getting a relatively uncommon 15" size, I got some cheap 14" steelies and installed tires in the OEM tire size for the base Fit.
And it’s not like it matters much since the base and sport Fit have the exact same engine with the same power. And if anything, the base Fit is a little faster since it’s a bit lighter due to less equipment.

Nokians are a European tire brand (based in Finland) with a long history of making snow tires.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokian_Tyres
Also note that Nordman tires are the budget-brand Nokian tires. It’s the same company.

I figured the Nordmans were the budget Nokians when you mentioned them. I looked them up when I got the tires cause I’d never heard of them, and wanted to make sure I wasn’t getting some Chinese crap. Needless to say, I’ve been very happy with them.
