Since my April track day, I’ve been having frustrating back fires and weird times. After giving up on everything else,
I
think I found my vacuum leak... Decided to smoke test the intake system just to see what my random misfires were. I changed all O2 plugs and did a whole rebuild on the CCV. Turns out I did the refresh right. Valve cover is cooked.
A
lso, I’m in love with my homemade vacuum leak tester. Simple and saved me a helluva lot on shop diagnosis.

Homemade smoke machine? Lightly pressurized can with something smoky in it and a hose coming out the other end? I’m in love with it too. What is the method of the smoke making?

Heated up mineral oil, that’s it.

I’m curious on the details of your smoke machine.

Paint can with a cheap plastic fitting from Advance Auto Parts on the top and bottom. Two screws with kanthal wire wrapped around tiki torch wicks, covered in mineral oil. Add electricity, and poof. You got a smoky-boi.

Yeah, I heat up a tiki torch wick wrapped in kanthal wire to make the smoke. But in a nice stream of air from the air compressor, and you got a smoke tester. I mirrored my like this guy on Youtube. Had to adjust due to missing parts.

Brilliant, This will come in handy when the “replace engine” comes on as My M rs does not care for them one bit. And her car is getting up in miles, so being able to find that little cracked elbow or leaky hose causing a “freak out immediately” light on the dash.

My E46 is in the shop for a smoke test as we speak! Probably a different cause though, I keep getting system too lean codes for b anks 1 + 2. Then a random barometric pressure range/performance code.

Chasing leaks have been a profile in endurance. I've been chasing and fixing leaks for a couple months. My biggest regret was not replacing everything at once.
