Looking to pick up another bike for around town duty and this one caught my eye:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Experienced input regarding the bike itself, asking price, and what a reasonable offer might be are appreciated. I may go and have a look at it this afternoon.
Update: Thanks for talking me down. I shall pass on this one. Didn’t feel like making the trip to Fairhaven today anyway.
Fwiw though I’m 6'4" and though I haven’t measured my bike inseam recently I recall it being in the neighborhood of 34". My cx bike is a 58cm but from what I recall those frames geometry tend to require sizing down by a couple of cm for best results, so figured a 60 would be in the ballpark for a road bike. Will take some actual measurements when I get the opportunity though.
Thanks again for the input.

$235 is steep for that bike, it’s also huge so you better be tall. I’d say $150 then plan on adding new tires, tubes and brake pads to make it safe to ride.

Better than department store bikes but that was lower end when it was new. “Excellent condition” but I bet you’ll be spending another $100 for tires, tubes, sundries.
I’m not up on prices of those old bikes but his asking seems jacked up by “vintage” delusions so I’d think you could find something newer for similar price.
Y
ou don’t need to pay the “vintage”
premium
for an around town bike.

I’m 6'4"tall and that bike would be too big for me with a 34"standover height.

$150 seems generous, IMO.

And he’s ruined the ‘vintage’
price he wants with those handlebars and brake levers. I bet it’ll need hours of rebuilding all the bearings.
I don’t like this for what you’re looking for.

I’m trying to be helpful, it’s not a total POS just a slight POS.

I agree with that. No more than $100 tops.
And sweet Jeeeesus, you a tall mofo to need a 60cm frame.

Fine for a beater bike that you don’t mind chaining on racks everywhere. You need to check the frame to make sure nothing is bent or cracked on it. Anything else can be repaired if necessary, but not the frame. But it’s too much for this bike. I’d pay $50, maybe $75.

No!
Tell me how tall you are then: B arefoot, jam a hardcover book up between your legs just below the point it’s painful. Have someone measure distance from ground to top of book. Report back with the number and never under any circumstance buy a vintage French bike. I’m dead serious on the last no matter what I or anyone else say.
I see a few bikes that look better on that CL. Size will determine the next step regardless.

Too much money for something with such a tall frame, the market for these are so much lower than smaller frames so the price should be adjusted accordingly. Also non-original handle bars and brake levers are sad looking, and you always need to worry about parts compatibility on vintage F rench bikes . I’d say it’s a $100 bike.

These are weird parts-wise. Like a mix of japanese parts and french parts so fixing them if often a pain. I wouldn’t pay more than 120 for it and I have spent 10x that on bikes plenty of times. Are you over 6'1"? These are much better options for a tall rider:

In pristine condition.
With interesting provenance.
During a sequence of events that cast it in a desirable light.

I just got an old bike as well. Needed new grips, tires and tubes, and I got the cheapest tune and lube possible at $60. With the parts, I spent $170 just to have a road going bike.
This bike is made for giants, it’s way too expensive, and you can count on $100-ish in parts to be road worthy, unless it has fresh tires and tubes and lube.

Bicycle market is kinda fuct at the moment. No way that’s worth that much when you can get a decent Walmart bike for the same price. Or spend a bit more and get a lower spec’d “real” bike, which can be had under $1k and will be a bazillion times better.

That bike is too tall for you unless you are secretly a professional basketball player or something. Also: don’t pay a premium for a vintage bike, they are way worse (unless of course you mainly want a vintage bike for the style and are willing to sacrifice for it)

My opinion is that it’s better to just spend the money on a new bike. To me this is a $100 bike at most.

Unless you have a 35" or greater inseam, the bike is too big.

A 60cm old bike isn't suuuper large. I'm 6'4" and I look for '63cm' sized bikes. I do have long legs though. But these frames aren't designed to be run with long seatposts, so the sizing isn't comparable to more modern frames, which are.

How long are your legs? The s tandover height o n my Marin with a 60cm frame is 32.25".
