Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I’ve actually seen two on the road in Seattle this summer. Here’s one for sale being stored in Cali with an SD title, for 23 LARGE.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Basically, it’s a third gen crew cab which the US didn’t get.

And did you want the legendary reliability of the 22RE? Well, this has the next best thing: this is the carbureted 3Y engine, which has less power and torque than even the 20R.

Don’t get me wrong. I’d totally rock one, but not for 23 grand.

Yup, the problem is the price, not the truck.

Good to know I’m not the only frustrated obsessive.

I test drove an overpriced but pretty clean WJ today. White, ugh. But it has a lot of promise once they fix the problems I pointed out.

The incredibly low mileage helps justify the price but still... Those gasoline engines are terrible. I've exported a bunch of those but solely get them in diesel (and manual).

All that is just hype.  Except for that bed with the exterior tie-down hooks: that ish is BOMB.

I feel like if you're going for max novelty with a RHD crew can version of a truck we got you should at least get diesel.

I remember driving those things in anger as part of the work fleet (diesel engine though) for nearly five years ...there is no way in Hell I would willingly pay good money for one then or even now in the cold light of 30 years later. And especially not the equivalent of US$23,000.

Absolute insanity. I grew up around these - you couldn’t throw a rock without hitting one anywhere in Asia in the early 90s. Just go ask the Taliban :)

I guess this is a factor of them being so popular back then that there actually aren’t that many left in Japan for import at this point (given the huge disincentives to hold on to older cars there)...so most of them got shipped elsewhere ages ago and got run to the ground (/ahem, modified with machine guns) in other parts of the world.

So the few that are left in decent enough shape to be brought over here after our 25 year limit runs out, well they command stupid dollars. Plenty of other vehicles one could rather buy for the money - unless you just want to have something unique and be a hipster about it :)

I think so. I’ve spotted this one a bunch of times over the last few months, but this was the first time close enough in stopped/slow-moving traffic to get pix. ( There are a few importers  in & around Seattle that specialize in kei trucks and other JDM oddities, so these trucklets are not as rare a sight in the PNW as they are elsewhere.)

There’s what appears to be an old bicycle parking rack (like you’d find at a school, library, etc) spanning the front of the bed in this one.

I wonder what the story is on that one. Bike enthusiast who likes JDM trucks?

...and this is partly why I bought the Pajero and not an imported Hilux/Surf/Land Cruiser. The Toyota tax adds about $ 8-9K to the price of an otherwise largely equivalently capable/durable/rugged JDM, manual turbo- diesel off roader.
