I don’t know if it’s different in the US but in Europe the first two digits of te date are the week (and not the month) and the 2 last are the year.

And the table with colored values at the beginning is a bit confusing, what do you mean by cold, warm and hot and competition is only adding confusion (not to mention that there can be various types of competition tires ) .

A spicy-hot take on all season tires.

I agree, that table is weird. I assume orange is worse than yellow (I can only imagine how terrible that is for someone who is color-blind).

And rather than repeat the words in each column I’d put weather as headers across the top. Wet, cold, warm, hot.

Spicy but correct

It’s pretty good. I believe the first 2 numbers on the date of manufacturing are week and not month (also brought up by Jb boin).

Also I would make a distinction between All Season and All Weather tires. Living in PNW I regard All Seasons as 3 Season Tires even though a significant amount of drivers still use them all year, IMO they’re not acceptable in snow. Even the ones that state “can be used in light snow conditions”.

All Weather tires are acceptable for year round use including snow (they hold the 3 peak) but because of all the compromise between tread pattern and compound they’re not great at anything. I’ve seen widely different tire wear ratings in the class which should determine if it’s more warm or cold based climate.

Also most people don’t really factor in the degrade of grip due to road temperature. One can loosely base it on ambient as 7C [45F] where the warm tire compounds begin to stiffen up, lo se pliability and thus grip reduction even on dry roads . It’s why they’re called winter tires and not snow tires anymore.

Kinja'd!!!

This is the reason why I don’t ride the bike below 7C anymore as it’s on summer tires (partial competition) and I lowsided at 3C. I can feel the tires starting to loose grip with temperatures below 11C because they are not building or keeping heat and are hockey puck hard and slick .

It’s also the reason why I switch my tires at 10C [50F] high in the fall for the beater in the Fall drop and Spring rise. Chances are the morning commute is going to be below 7C [45F]. It’s still warm enough that working outside is fine, the winters are being run in acceptable temps, and I’m already way prepped for first snow fall.

Also it’s well know for bikers that tires also degrade with age. After 5 years or so tires begin to lose grip as they become dry and less pliable. It’s the same with car tires. My buddy rear ended someone after picking up used winter tires that had decent tread but were 8 years old.

My post from yesterday directly targeted the exact comment you're making. I should have titled that "I went to an autocross on a performance all-season and was entirely uncompetitive as a result."

These are really good points I wish I had brought up in hindsight. Thanks for bringing them to light, hugely important to know.

Nope, same here.
