"Full of the sound of the Gran Fury, signifying nothing." (granfury)

Still a funny skit 40+ years on. The questions is how many people will get the reference. I wonder if they just play old SNL skits on a loop in there for entertainment, although I would expect that to be met with a lawsuit...

You should’ve gone inside to check whether they have
Coke or Pepsi.

There was one in Baton Rouge . I don’t know if it was an independent shop or a franchise. Best burgers and shakes in town. It’s gone now...

I used to work near one of those, but never tried it. They were in the same little strip mall as a Trader Joe’s.

This is like when Jimmy Buffett opened up those Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurants and got sued by the original cheeseburger stand in the British Virgin Islands that inspired the song. Not sure how that worked out, but I believe almost all of those have closed by now, didn’t seem to last long in the market in comparison to Margaritaville.

Decent - think Wayback - they had/have a gigantic 1lb burger, if you finished it, they took a Polaroid and put it on the wall.

Maybe I’m outing myself as a fa t man, but a 1lb burger doesn’t seem that daunting? I mean I guess it depends on how it’s topped, but that sounds more like just a big meal rather than something like one of those obscenely huge steaks or something.

I think they changed the skit in the late ’70s to ‘no Pepsi, Coke’ IIRC

It could be the same one. Des Peres, MO, just down from I-270. I have approximately zero memory of what else was in the same strip mall, I just really really had to get the fuck out of that goddamned miserable office.

Lol. I’m in the Chicago burbs, so this place doesn’t exist here (Billy Goat Tavern sucks by the way), but I went to one in Fort Myers years ago on a golf trip with a former NFL lineman. He and my brother got the pounder (after cooking!!), and they got fries and shakes with it. The lineman ate ALL of it and was debating getting a 2nd shake for the ride home.
Decent burger at least.

Its definitely
doable, but 1lb of ground beef is a very large burger - its almost 1700 calories just by itself, and you know you’re going to have a soda and probably fries with it. Hell, just
a 1/4lb burger is still
a big lunch.

I never have soda with anything, so maybe that helps. I did have two half-pound (plant) burgers for dinner one night last week (normally I wouldn’t but I had had the stuff for a while and was worried about it keeping). Two third-pounders would be more typical if I’m doing burgers.

There’s a funny echo in here—- I was in Madison WI (don’t ask) for awhile last month and reacquainted with Rocky Rococo’s Pizza.
Those guys got sued by Firesign Theater, who had originally used the name in a Nick Danger comedy sketch decades ago . Regrettably, Firesign’s attorneys hadn’t actually protected the copyright very well- some of the troupe had even eaten at Rocky’s in the early days, signed autographs and generally been “cool” with the appropriation of the name. When the Firesign lawyers finally got rev’ved up it was too late and they lost the trademark.

Most burgers give the weight before cooking. Years ago when I went to one of these joints, they made it very clear that it was one pound *after* cooking. It was 20 oz when raw. It was hefty. Worst part is that it was too big to cook well. My brother didn’t finish his because it was pretty raw in the middle. I just had the half lb.

This is the same one you saw. I only go there for TJ’s (Brentwood is closer but much too busy, and that parking lot is horrible). I , too , have no idea what else is in that shopping center, and only noticed the restaurant because they had a sign out in the parking lot. Get i n, get out, and get back downtown.

Yeah, I’m assuming these were pre-cooked rates. I like my burgers pretty rare, but they do need to be warm in the middle at least. But yeah, f or a single 20oz burger, I think you’d want to sous-vide it and then just sear the outside or something, going to be hard to cook it through normally without either overdoing the outside or leaving the inside undercooked and unsafe.

Buffett is a law suit happy guy. There was a local moving company where I am that was named “Changes in Latitude”. Well, Buffett’s lawyers got wind of that and the next thing you know the name was changed to “ New La titude”. I guess Patti LaBelle isn’t as litigious, or at least the new name isn’t a direct letter-for-letter copy and so is defensible.

Had one of those franchises near me about 10 years ago. It closed shortly after I took my son. It was nothing like Billy Goat Tavern (which I’ve also gone to). I was disappointed that the theme that the name might suggest wasn’t reflected in the place. It was like a 1950s chrome seat diner (except it wasn’t) with burgers served in cardboard trays that resembled classic cars. I tried to hang onto one of the trays for nostalgia sake, but I think the wife threw it out.
The place is now a Pho Noodle shop.

You mostly remember correctly. The Olympia Diner was a series of sketches. In one, a customer was arguing asking for a Coke, constantly hearing “No Coke, Pepsi.” While they were arguing, a Coke salesman came in and got the diner to switch vendors. When the customer finally gave in and asked for a Pepsi, he was told “No Pepsi, Coke.”
