This is an old Army trailer, surplused to the civilian market. It doesn’t see much use and has been out in the weather for a long time. I don’t know military vehicles well enough to give a proper identification, but it’s probably Vietnam-era or slightly newer.
This was made to be towed behind the larger trucks, like the 2.5- or 5-ton 6x6s . You can hook it up to anything with a pintle hitch, but it isn’t level on smaller vehicles. This probably spent most of its service life behind some variant of an M35 or M809. The same guy who owns this trailer has one of those.
Not surprisingly, it was built to haul a heavy load and take abuse. Two sets of leaf springs, one fully attached and one that only makes contact after there is enough weight in it.
The gate can be unhooked from the chains to hang down flat against the back of the trailer so it’s out of the way if you need to back up to a loading dock.
I didn’t feel like crawling underneath to take a photo, but it also has a leg that could fold down in back (where the logs are in the photo) to keep the trailer from tipping backwards. I’m pretty sure both that leg and the crank in front have been rusted solid for years.

I saw a cleaner, similar one for sale when I was a couple hours from home. I almost stopped to inquire, but as I thought more about it, I realized that my back is in too bad a shape to maneuver something that heavy.
I guess I should try someday, but I just don’t see it in the cards for me.
Mighty appealing though.

Looks a lot like our Sankey trailers here in the U.K.
