Just noticed this on my bedroom window. Judging by the size, and the local population, I’m guessing it was a white-wing dove. But there’s also something about the head that hints at bluejay. Never did see a corpse in the backyard, so I suppose they walked it off.

I was instantly reminded of this:

Somebody broke my window. They didn’t take anything, but they left a dead bird behind.

Back when the boyos were still young and in daycare, I was sitting at the desk in the living room when I heard a very loud thump. I looked out the window and saw what I figured was a dead  dove on the deck. I thought, “Great, now I have to deal with that.” A couple minutes later I looked out and there was a very large hawk sitting on the deck railing. I had to go get the boys from daycare, but when I got back, both the hawk and the dove were gone. The hawk was either taking advantage of a lucky situation, or he had been chasing it when it crashed.

That’ll leave a mark. We had a similar imprint on a window for our old office. It was undoubtedly a pigeon so no big loss.

No big loss to YOU. That pigeon had a family, and when he never came home, all they were left with was questions.

If he didn’t go back it was because he faked his death. We never saw a body down below so he’s probably living it up on a beach somewhere.

Poor bird. Unless it was a pigeon. I was getting those strikes at my last house. Too often for my taste. I netting in front of the windows hung from the gutters.  I felt better.  No more strikes.

Our cres ted pigeons make much the same sort of marks and death or even injury is rare...they are tough.

It's now possible to get a coated glass for your windows that has very subtle marks that are visible to birds but not to us humans. And birds stop trying to punch holes in your class.

The last time I visited Grummy in Burlington, she was having a problem with cats hiding under her deck and jumping up and snagging birds from her feeder, so my task was to staple chicken wire along the bottom of the deck do deny the cats their hiding place.

Reminds me of my college days.  Our classes were on the 3rd floor of the building, and there was a very dusty imprint from some bird impact.  It stayed there for as long as I can remember.
