Been wanting to try my hand at Photography for years... Now I finally got my dad’s old Nikon FM2 back in action. It’s been, what, 14 years since I last shot with this camera, or any actual camera for that matter.
Most are pretty random shots, some with Fuji Xperia, some with Kodak Portra. The whole point was actually testing if my camera still worked, had any leaks, etc, and how the pictures would come out based on the aperture and shutter speeds for each of them.

I’d say the colors are spectacular and overall the photos are very good. I’m envious.

Thanks! The colors are all on the film stock lol, but I was surprised just how good they came out as well , considering they were metered without assistance. The old TTL meters on these Nikons are really reliable after all!

I really love your compositions. The colors, focus, and overall balance are very good in these. And where is this? Looks so vibrant in these photos even in the midst of a pandemic.
Also, this Cars esque statue is so creepy. Is it supposed to look like a stoner because it’s a “hippie van?”
Oh, and do you mind if I share this to the Photography Kinja?

Nice. Don’t worry about meeting any arbitrary standards of what’s artistic or valid. I figure if a picture makes you think of a place or a mood, then the photographer did a good job.

I think cats are good but not as good as dogs.
Also nice pictures.
Either way, you should post in Fur Face Friday: https://groupthink.kinja.com/fur-face-friday-1845457585

Excellent shots!
I wish I had an eye for composition like you. I always say the sign of a good photographer is when they can make ordinary subjects into something beautiful

True that, I guess that's what really counts in the end if you're photographing as a hobby. I figure if that's your line of work, then you have to meet a set of standards and client demands, but when all you got is an old SLR and you want to portrait the everyday of the places you live and go to, you're basically free of all that

Not at all! Please go ahead :) that first photo is my neighb orhood of Bom Fim, in Porto Alegre. T hat’s the angle from my living room and what actually closed the deal in moving to my current apartment lol
The second picture is from a retro themed gas station I pass by on my way to work, I stop there every single friday morning for a cup of coffee, a coxinha and a tankful of gas

Thanks man, that’s a really huge compliment! It’s actually not too hard to photograph my town, I’ve lived here for 10 years now, and Porto Alegre really is like my backyard. I love it here, and I've walked pretty much every street, avenue and blind alley in town, most of the time wishing I'd had a camera at hand to photograph it

That's actually the city of Porto Alegre, in Brazil, the best capital no one's ever heard about lol

Hey, I got the country right! I want to visit Brazi l someday though my Porti guese is about as non-existent as my Spanish.
Congrats on the move! That's a killer view. I really love these shots. Clearly you are proficient in capturing the essence of a particular time and place on film. I could look at these all day!

Also, forgot to mention, that’s Bom Fim, the nei ghborhood where I live in Porto Alegre, Brazil. It’s a great town, even in the middle of a pandemic, even with all of its flaws, it’s still where I found my place and identity. I’m probably in the minority when I say this, but I wouldn’t want to leave here for nothing in the world!

If you do, please come down to Porto Alegre! We have a character all of ou r own that most people don’t know about because we’re so far removed from the São Paulo- Rio de Janeiro circuit, but I can guarantee without a doubt you won’t find better street food anywhere else in Brazil

Might be some time before I get the chance to do any real traveling. I’ve always wanted to travel but as of now I haven’t really g one anywhere of note. If you ever come up this way, Atlanta is very much its own thing. I'd be happy to show you around and there's tons to do in the area.

Yup, I’ve lived here for 10 years by now, so not a whole lot, but I know the place like the back of my hand. By regular standards, it’s actually not that great a place to live, but for some reason this town really “fits” me... Plus, it’s got a whole character of its own, different from the usual feeling of Brazil you’d get in, say, São Paulo or Rio

Here’s a couple more I dug out from my last rolls:
First is a test shot with wide open DOF. I wanted to compare different aperture settings against the same background, and having two distinct cats made it pretty easy to do Garfield without Bokkeh and Harry with Bokkeh. Second shot, they were both on the sofa, sleeping together, perfect shot, perfect background blur, soft indirect lighting, but of course the moment I focused up and released the shutter, they had to freak out on each other lol. Third shot is Garfield having a bath in the sun on a warm spring afternoon.
And yup, that chair is the cats’ chair

Also, thanks a lot for the compliments :D That’s actually the very second roll I ever shot, not counting those blurry, poorly framed family vacation pictures that are like a hallmark of the 90's. I’m actually pretty good at handling this one specific camera, since my dad’s owned it since before I was born and he let me play around with it ever since I was little, so the controls, motions, sounds and feeling of the mechanical pieces clicking together are etched into my memory, but actually trying to get decent pictures without chopping peoples’ heads off is new -ish to me lol
