Now that’s tragic. Rather worryingly I see similar behavior as what caused the crash all the timem and you never know just when something like that could go horribly wrong.

We do get spoiled by the fact that so much terrible driving rarely ends in tragedy. There’s some merit to the argument that instead of airbags every steering wheel should have a giant spike aimed at the driver’s chest.

That’s some spectacularly bad driving. He had to know the truck was there (can’t hide a truck towing two trailers in a blind spot). Obviously his was freaked out about being in the exit only lane, but he had plenty of room to pass the car in front of the truck (and looks like he would have had he not slowed down), or if he didn’t want to be that aggressive, he could have slowed down and slipped in behind the truck. Just shoving into the side is a pretty terrible decision that shows a lack of judgement about space, and a lack of understanding about truck’s ability to make sudden changed.
Personally my rule of thumb is that I should be able to see both headlights in my rear-view mirror before moving over.

It’s kind of impressive that reckless driving so rarely ends in tragedy. Of course someone has to drive defensively to prevent the crashes in the first place. It’s when multiple distracted/bad/impaired drivers meet that the tragedy strikes.
Just yesterday was the first time I’ve driven in two months and I had to avoid someone merging into me without a care in the world. And I had to avoid a drunk driver in a bro truck who seems determined to use all 5 or so lanes at once.

That just pisses me off. The guy had two logical choices: a) speed up to the gap ahead of the car in front of the semi instead of behind it, or b) let off the throttle to fall behind the semi and find a space to merge into.

And that’s not even counting just missing your exit and being 5 minutes late.

I always check not just for a big enough gap when merging in front of a semi but also checking ahead for obvious slowdowns because there’s a reason they leave bigger gaps.

Will do. While I’m at it I’m going to find that drunk driver in a bro’d out Ram that ordinarily would be exactly the same width as a lane but somehow managed to take up three lanes with his weaving that nearly ran me off the road last night.
