All i see is a thousand parts that can fail and an overbearing ad campaign for penis enlargement. Maybe if anyone other than GM (or Tesla) was behind the idea, I mig ht be on-board.

So unds like bias to me, but I get it. There’s a reason people hate GM. There’s also reasons to hate Ford, Honda, Tesla, BMW, etc. Some of them are good reasons, but some aren’t. I sold GMs and my view is: The Hummer looks like a winner, but I’m sure they’ll screw it up somehow. They always do......

That commercial was definitely a bit much but it looks pretty slick. I’ll never buy one, but when this tech makes it down to reasonably priced vehicles I just might.
Also was it just me or was it strange to have Justin Timberlake in screen for 10 seconds while voiceover was done by will Will Arnett?

Will be really interesting to see between the Hummer, Bronco & Cybertruck which one comes away as the big sales (profit) winner.
Seems like the Bronco’s already a big hit, so the other two have a way to go.
How many of those $100 Cybertruck reservations will actually turn into sales?

GM’s engineering history is legendary. They engineer the most creative and best parts. Ferrari licenses their electric shock absorber technology, for example. And then GM beancounters the cheapest way to build anything they sell, and we get Cobalt build quality.
This ‘supertruck’ will be a solid piece of truck. but it is 100k+ and anyone spending 100k+ will expect that. GM must not fail here if they want people to believe in their electrotruck(s). A smokers narration voice makes it tough! A bearded driver makes it TOUGH!
They did well with the Bolt. They have background in what works. This is a loss exercise, to see the interest and see who will buy it but also see how they use it. They will spend more to make it then what they sell of it. But the next generations of these trucks, built with the market research this Hummer generates, will be even better target designed but most importantly, beancountered to make profits, and have problems for the rest of us who can only afford ,maybe, a truck at half this price.
Get the extended warranty. You will need it.
PS: This guy isnt smiling at all in the ad piece. Hes not enjoying this at all, loooks like hes clenching in seething passive agressive ways. Mr. Burnsing his fingers while passing another car.....excellent....
Is this guy having an enormous ‘im better at truck than you’ boner moment ?

I think that really depends on the price. I’ve been seeing that the Hummer will be starting at six figures, and I have a hard time thinking they could sell it for less. They need to recoup the R&D costs for all the tech they’re throwing at this thing.
The Mach E is a Tesla Model X competitor, and is priced accordingly. This thing is basically running against, what, the Bollin ger B1/B2 and the Rivian R1T? The Bollinger B2 starting price is $125k, and the R1T, which is half as much, also is a much smaller vehicle.

This
serves a certain demographic that we might not relate to and I’m okay with that. I might not be ready to order one but I’m glad it exists so that one day the technology it uses
will tickle down into automobiles we can afford or are interested in. And I agree that there will be parts that will fail but that’s
also why we
love German cars like the OG
Audi Allroad because it’s faults are endearing (especially for the people that don’t own one). Joking aside,
hopefully those faults will teach us
to create
better systems that are reliable and durable.
We need less hate for the things we don’t agree with and enjoy the
opportunities like this that will hopefully progress EV or alternative energy technology forward.

My gut says Bronco just from the barrier of entry (perceived or otherwise).
From a pure volume between the Hummer and the Cybertruck, I’d say it’s a toss up. Who I’m personally rooting for is Rivian.

Yeah, I’d like to see Rivian do really well, too. Their exterior design is by far the best, and having partnerships with Amazon & Ford doesn’t hurt!
Hope Bronco sells great, and forces Toyota and others to bring more products to market.

I know, and i agree with you, I’m just so sick of endless marketing exercises dressed up as an “opportunity to push new technology into the mainstream” that inevitably 1) becomes vaporware, or 2 ) is only applied to vehicles that are unobtainable by 90% of the population, or 3 ) said technology is held behind patents for 25 years and nothing is done with it because it’s not “ cost-effective” to produce it en masse. We’ve watched it happen again and again.

Just slipped my mind, but the other three are proven volume
makers/sellers at this point. I’m sure Rivian will do well, because of their partnerships if nothing else
, and I want them to. First deliveries to individual buyers
middle of next year, I guess.
How much will

I think they get a few things out of it:
- The potential to use the R1S platform and have it branded/done up as a Lincoln luxury SUV. It sounds like this may have been the initial idea, but may have changed now. (Low volume, high price, and gets them experience of making/shipping a luxury EV, which seems to be how most are getting into the EV fray).
- They do get to tap some incredibly brilliant minds. It seems like Rivian has picked up all the talent that Tesla has burned up/dumped out, and anything else they haven’t snagged
. They seem to have some really smart, enthusiastic
people working for them.
- It buys some relief from the Ford investors. Ford hasn’t done much visible work in the pure
EV game, and that’s where the puck is headed. It seems like t
heir prior experience (Focus EV
, Fusion/C-Max Energi) hasn’t been applied to other areas. If anything, they looked at Rivian as an investment, to which they can later sell off (like how Daimler/Benz, or maybe it was Toyota?
invested in Tesla early on, and made quite a bit of money off the deal).

That is true. I’m pretty fortunate in that regard - I’ve got a steady job with regular hours, and working from home means I get to see a bit more of my kids. Especially important while they are still young (roughly ages 6, 4, and 2).
I do hope some day that I can be a part of something exciting, where everyone has that unified vision and is building/working on something amazing. I’ve seen that same sort of thing when watching the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings extras - the people at Weta. And some game development companies as well. Some day I want to be proud of the things I work on.

I would love to but the real nuts and bolts of how they function would take a whole lot more time to research than I want. I want to see the Donut guys do a post on why GM cars are so horrible yet with such a knowlege base.
I loved my ‘97 S-10, until at 7 years old, it smelled like electrics on every left turn....that was it’s third wiring harness. And let’s not get started on GM thinking it was a great idea to make the intake manifold distribute air, and also water! Making the manifold gasket horribly expensive. Or the three layers of interior to remove just to replace a mirror. And three layers of dashboard just to replace a blinker cap...whatever those things are called, and the paint was going. Traded in at 76k miles, got hardly anything for it. Cause KBB said it was nearly worthless, so the mythical black book is of course zero.
That is the expected GM performance of anything they make, regardless of the engineering cachet.
