Thoroughly enjoyed driving my SS to work today for the first time.
The first time? Yes, because 2020...
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I tucked my basically new, bonzer SS into my garage. The next morning, I smelled gas. Ugh. Nothing on the ground, so thought I might not have tightened the fuel cap. Drove it the rest of that weekend, and parked its new home in the shop. Well, I go out there Sunday evening and there’s A LOT of gas on the ground, and the underside of the tank is soaked. UGH. Moved the car outside to avoid, you know, an explosion.
Very, very thankfully, the car’s still under initial warranty (was purchased in Nov. 2017). Because of how much fuel had leaked, I called roadside assistance to le
t them get it to the dealer. Great feeling to see the car you just bought a few days ago on a flatbed! By the time it gets to the dealer and they take a look, it’s all dry, so I tell them exactly what occurred over the preview few days and sent them photo/video of the leak and wet tank. They fill the tank, drive it, and replicate the leak, but are still unable to locate
the source, even after draining it and doing a smoke
test. But it’s clearly got a leak so they order a replacement tank/pump/etc. Told me the parts were going to take over a week to arrive. I figured they were coming from OZ, but apparently there’s a slow boat that comes from
China
Michigan, too.
Anyway, I finally got my car back yesterday and all seems good, so far
[knock wood].
It really is a great car and fits my needs & wants perfectly right now. Hopefully after this initial stumble, it will be a faithful companion for many years to come!
2020, man...

Welcome to GM, where our cars have such high performance that they outrun quality control!
My Camaro has a plastic knee pad on the transmission tunnel that likes to pop out and fall into the footwell at autocross events. I hope the rest of yours holds up okay from here on out.

Well that’s not started off very well. I hope it’s just new car teething issues. When my Impreza was about 4-5 years old I drove it through Idaho during a cold snap and fuel began leaking right onto the engine. Turns out the rubber to steel fuel rail hose connections were loose. I was able to fix it with the subaru provided screwdriver outside of a breakfast dinner on 5 degree weather.

Cars like to be driven. Hopefully the weird gas situation is remedied by regular use!

Yikes! Glad it was an easy fix, at least.
I’m wondering if mostly sitting for 3.5 years with a nearly
empty tank caused some problem. Cars like to be driven, after all.

Sitting for a few years would be my guess, those rubber parts and gaskets need to be wet and used to last, ironic I know but there is probably some kind of science behind it.
My dad drives his 1971 Datsun 240Z thousands of miles a year and claims it’s the most reliable car he has because he drives it so much and knows every screw and bolt on the car. Meanwhile I’m putting gorilla tape on his cars floor boards to cover up the holes in the floor.

Yep. When I asked the guy I bought it from if he’d ever smelled gas, he mentioned he never put much fuel in it for fear of it going bad. I’ll never understand garage queen folk... but I appreciate him keeping this one pristine for me, and selling it to me before the warranty ran out!
LOL -
I like your dad.

Maybe my Cruze has held up because it is too slow to outrun quality control. . .

If that’s true, this is undeniable proof that a 4-cylinder Camaro is fast! Hahaha

‘Straya fuel tanks ain’t built for the cold!
I saw this happen on a brand new Tundra when I was at Toyota. Guy bought the car, we filled up with gas, and he calls the next day to say “We didn’t fill it up because it’s at half a tank. And the guy must have spilt fuel on himself, because the truck reeks!”
He drives it in and it’s leaking fuel down the side of the tank and onto the service drive. Found out a fuel line had split somehow between delivery, inspection, test drive and delivery and was gushing fuel out.
How we missed it, I’ll never know. But it can happen!

I don’t get that mentality . I mean, maybe I’m not one to talk as I don’t do that many miles in my M3, but I do take it out and drive it. If it sits for over two weeks, I make an effort to take it out.
For the past two years it had this nasty vibration when I took it over 70, which discouraged me from driving it. I finally had enough of that and took it in, I was prepared for some stupid expensive bill, but all it needed was the front wheels balanced . Been driving it more as a result, and it’s a lot happier when it gets driven more. I also don’t like to turn it off until its up to temp, so if it’s just a 5 minute drive, I take the 3. It’s sitting in the garage with a full tank of gas for this weekend.

Me, too! Those pictures are brutal...
Because of the super low miles, I was able to get a GMEPP extended warranty for 5 more years and 50k miles for $800. Seemed like a good price for some peace of mind.
