This is as much a batmobile of yachts as I can think of

Kinja'd!!!

It’s one of Roman Abromavitchs creations, called Ecstasea (punny). That is a HUGE jet-powered pumpjet. Specifically, the GE LM2500 marine gas turbine. It’s roughly 31,000 hp and a marine version of the engine on the C-5 Galaxy, the CF-6 or TF39. The yacht already had 4 diesel engines of 3100 hp each hooked up to high-speed shafts and props. With just the oil burners it will do 25 knots. If you REALLY need to be first in line at Monaco harbor then you fire up the turbine and pick up an extra 5 knots (and lose a lot of fuel weight).

It shoots it out the back like a jet engine that uses water...cause it is. It’s great.

Its pretty fancy, it even has its own helicopter garage

oh, it also eats bridge booths in its spare time.

Of course, after a few years, he got bored with it and dropped it for a newer hotter yacht.

We spotted one of Roman’s little runabouts, Luna , in San Diego a few years ago. He doesn’t own it any more. It’s apparently in the middle of a very expensive dispute over ownership.

That helicopter garage is some serious James Bond villain shit.

I also get to see Luna when I was there. Didn’t know about the ownership issue. interesting

Wow. I have to admit I was completely ignorant to  the existence of yachts of this scale/size until a few minutes ago. Watching that thing move though the water looks like a camera trick.

If it’s not faster than Destriero, I’m not interested.

I used to work for the company that bought out the designer, and knew some guys that worked on this project. It was/is an incredible vessel.

My favorite ship as a kid was the Gentry Eagle, the Destrier o’s predecessor

I had a cool Destriero picture, but it wouldn’t load.

I don’t know much about the Gentry Eagle, I’ll have to do some more research on that one. I’m not well read on yacht racing (a bit rich for my blood), but I worked for Gibbs & Cox for a while, the designer of the Freedom Class LCS, which they based on the Destriero hull form. Thats how it came to my knowledge, and while I was working there they bought out the Destriero’s designer. It was a really interesting time .

Also note that Fincantie ri, builder of Destriero, ended up buying out Marinette Marine, where the Freedom class LCS are constructed.

Enigma (ex Katana ex Eco) does the same stunt: diesels for range, turbine for speed. Except she has all of them powering water jets, and is a bit faster (if smaller). 36 knots from 28,5 00hp total (18500  from the turbine, a tiddly LM1 600), with the assistance of a submerged foil that gives 120 tons of lift

That’ s a neat one. Ecstasea is certainly not the only tur bine mega yacht but it’ s got the funkiest pump

Yes, it’s certainly got the “batmobile for whales” look nailed. Seems odd that it’s not steerable or reversible - extreme manoevrability is one of the main benefits of jet propulsion: why not have it?

I wonder if it was a technical limitation of the power and the available pumps at the time.

Possibly. I recall somethi ng in the blurb about Enigma th at she had the largest jet unit KaMeWa had ever built, so back in 1991 16, 000hp was cutting edge. Nowadays Kongsberg* have a “standard” unit rated at 4o, 000hp: a mere 30,000's three sizes down their range . But when Ecstacea was launched in 2004 maybe 30,000 was up in cus tom build territory.

Gotta say though, if I was a gaz ill io na ire spending insane money on the world’s large st jetboat, I’d feel ripped off if I couldn’t scare my guests, break my sculpture collection, and drown small countries   with a   Hamilton Turn.

* which is who KaMeWa are at present, having been Rolls Royce for a while in the middle
