On Tuesday I got cold called from the Ford dealer saying they “wanted to buy” my 2010 Ranger, I was invited to a “VIP event” on Saturday.

I thought to myself that if they would give me X trade value for the Ranger and sell me Y vehicle for Z price, I would be willing to buy a new vehicle. I knew they likely wouldn’t be willing to give me the numbers I would want, but at least I might get some new test drives out of it.

When I get to the dealer Saturday, it looks like a regular day at the dealer with the addition of masks and physical distancing. Speaking with the salesperson we went over the condition of my truck, what kind of vehicle I was interested in looking at (SuperCab truck or manual Mustang), and how many months I was wanting to finance for, but did not ask for my actual budget. I said if we could get pricing right I would be paying cash ( again he didn’t ask my budget and I didn’t offer it).

I initially thought they were going to be showing me new cars but was offered up used vehicles. The first up was a Ranger with 20k on the odometer.

I thought as I walked up to it was that it is very tall. I get in the drivers seat and it was very easy to adjust everything into a comfortable position.

Moving to the backseat I found there was plenty of head anf leg room to sit behind myself. The rear seat does fold up but there isn’t much storage do to the small wedge shaped cubbies underneath. The folding mechanism was not well thought out, it was difficult to find and had to be pulled exactly perpendicular to the seat cushion to release.

Back into he driver seat I found that user interface was rather busy and hard to read, with clusters of small buttons and small font, a little to far out of reach. The instrument cluster had a speedometer in the middle with two screens on either side controlled by two directional pads on the steering wheel. Also on the steering wheel were the controls for the adaptive cruise control and phone/music, all were easy to reach. The lighting switch cluster was hidden behind the wheel to the left of the column, and was to far away to reach without leaning in and over, the font on the buttons was to small to read while sitting in the drivers seat. The touchscreen was adequately sized and layed out, easy to use from the driver seat, the touchscreen controlled the climate, music, and nav. The physical controls for the music were perfectly placed two large knobs volume/power, tune/source, and three small buttons prev.,pause/play, for. The physical controls for the climate were small and placed a bit to far down the dash. The console had the shifter, the 4x4 switch and the switch cluster for locking diff, tow/haul, start/stop, traction control, park sensors, ad some speed control I didn’t recognize the pictogram for, this cluster was pushed forward in to the corner of the console and dash far out of reach.

As for the driving, put the 10spd transmission in drive and your greeted with indecision and turbo lag. This was remidied by leaving the transmission in sport mode, letting the engine rev more and with faster shifts. The handling was acceptable but the ride was not well sorted, it would transition from too soft and floaty, to harsh and stiff. I’m unsure if this because of wear from the previous owner or if Ford didn’t tune the suspension properly.

Next I took it onto a gravel road, checked 4x4 operation and the rear locking differential, which was incredibly slow (30sec) so slow that when I thought I disengaged the lock it somehow re-locked after I drove away, and didn’t realize till I got back to the dealer when I heard the tires chattering. The truck handled the gravel well but the traction/stability control kept interrupting, I didn’t think to turn it off.

Additional I really liked the heated seats but the leather was too slippery. The 5ft bed on this crew cab truck is not really long enough to hold a motorcycle. The Bang and Olufsen sound system sounded terrible. The blind spot monitor system worked well.

Felling pretty meh about the truck, but probably worth looking into a second test drive possibly an extended drive maybe something with cloth seats.

2018 Ford Mustang GT

Kinja'd!!!

Triple Yellow Tri-coat, 5.0L V8, and a 6spd transmission. What more can I say.

Once again I found it very easy to get into a comfortable position, and the cloth bucket seats felt fantastic. When I went to get in the back seat I found out that I couldn’t reach the seat tipping mechanism from outside the car, instead had to use the recline lever. Sitting in the back seat there was plenty of leg room, but I hit my head on the corner of the roof where it transitions to the rear window.

The clutch was light and the shifter had a nice weight to it. The controls all fall easy to hand including the touchscreen, stereo, climate, and the toggle switches that control the drive and steering modes, traction, and hazards, the controls all seem to promote keeping your vision up and forward while using them.

The best part was that this Mustang was equipped with the active exhaust. it sounded wonderful in sport mode, nice rumble on acceleration and burbling on deccel. There was plenty of grip going around corners.

The trunk is very large and with the seats folded down the plenty of space. I was surprised at the amount of bare metal there was in the trunk. This car didn’t come with a spare tire.

I loved this car, the color, the V8, the transmission, and the interior, it all makes for a real nice package.

In Conclusion

Test drives over I went back in to the salesperson ( I was driving alone) to discuss numbers. So how much was the dealer offering on a 2010 Ford Ranger Reg cab 2WD 4cyl Auto with only 36k km(yes really)... $4000.

Keep in mind when I looked at the comparables the night before between what other dealers are charging and private sales, I was seeing prices of $8-12k. They said the only reason they were offering so much(ha) was because of the low kms.

They wanted $42k for the Ranger and $36k for the Mustang. They said they might be able to take 1k off the price, but it was clear we weren’t not going to come to agreement on this.

I then asked about price they could take off a new base model Ranger or base model Mustang, even though I knew they didn’t have any in inventory. The salesperson then told me the Ford rebates on them, then tried to sell me a $50k Bullitt Mustang because it had $11k in rebates. So I said I wasn’t going to be buying a car today, and he said of he got something cheaper in he would call me.

It’s always a good day to test drive cars.

Glad you enjoyed the Mustang.

I test drove both (10 speed auto) as well last year

I like the ranger, didn’t feel the lag or transmission indecisiveness but the ride was a problem like you mentioned

Loved the Mustang, God bless the 5.0 Coyote. Glorious glorious sound

That Mustang looks amazing in that color. With the 5 liter and a 6 speed that’s one enviable machine!

I can’t find any good pictures of the cloth interior. I’m pleasantly surprised you can actually get cloth with the 5.0. What was that like? Because I prefer cloth over leather but I also don’t like all black interiors. With a different exterior color the red leather really spices things up.

Merlin Ford, eh? The purple shift knob in the Mustang is an odd thing but easily replaceable.

That’s one hell of a lowball on your truck though.

The audacity to invite you in for a potential trade-in and then give such a lowball offer. The Oppo reviews are much appreciated though; definitely a good thing to come out of the experience.

A question RE: the Mustang. How tall are you that you have legroom in the back? I’m 6'2" and long-legged, and I’m physically unable to sit in the back of my Camaro. Curious how the Mustang stacks up.

And if that is in CAD that is especially insulting.

That Ranger has the FX4 package which has the off road tuned suspension so that may have been why you didn’t like it. Are these prices in USD or CAD?

They were really banking on you saying something along the lines of, “Well heck, I’ve been here a couple hours and test driven two cars and all that time will be wasted if I don’t accept this $4k trade-in and finance a $40k vehicle!”

That combo sounds like an absolute blast. I’m not really a Ford guy but the current Mustang is a very good car. It’s got a lot of GT car influence.

That’s what got me. 10 year old truck should be at least 12k -14k in USD.
