Geez. I don’t even know what that thing is... and yet... something is stirring towards a trousers crisis.

It’s a C111, Mercedes’ rotary experiment

Yeah, but nobody every did a Safari Build on it... in that colour... did they?
All of those I remember were in silver, suspensions compressed, on a bank at Hockenheim...

That’s cool. As someone who likes to take his MR2 camping, and is bothered by all the dodgy ass roads...The world needs more off-road capable sports cars! Does the world have any? Has there ever been a mid-engined car with a bit of height to it? Or even a front-engined coupe?

There was an orange one. Corgi made a 1:43 model of it: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Corgi-Toys-1-43-Mercedes-C111-/193444649071 (I think I still have mine, somewhere, from my childhood.)

Been thinking this too! I’m wondering if a more mild version of this could be done with bigger tires and a ride height adjustment.
If I max out my MR2’s coilovers and put on some bigger tires (the fenders will fit 26” offroad tires, currently running smaller 24-25” tires at autoX) I think around 3-4” of body lift are available.
Nothing revolutionary but the clearance would be nice. Mid-engine traction should help.
The SW20 chassis has a ton of droop travel so there’s a bit of headroom there too:
Might actually have to look further into this. ”Safari MR2,” mmmmmmm...

The Mega Track!
As well as the Rally Fighter, which is front-engined.
There’s also the Korres P4, which I think you can buy?
Patents have been filed for what looks like a production version of the Alpine A110 SportsX Concept, let’s hope that makes it.
Gemballa are teasing their upcoming Avalanche 4x4, although would that be considered a modified car?
Umm what else... Did Porsche ever sell a production 911 Safari? Does an Ariel Nomad count?

It’s a damn good idea. All you need then is some way to provide better storage. A roof rack that doesn’t hinder the t-tops maybe ;) The rear deck is well shaped for luggage, but it’s got those vents from the engine bay..

This is such a great answer!
The Rally Fighter and P4 are cool, but they seem more off road toys than something that can actually carry camping gear. Also I doubt their legality or availability in Australia.
The Mega Track is perfect, but again, there’s 5 built so they’re not exactly available.
I think the Gemballa is the closest answer. Porsche have a history of taking cars off road but they’ve produced few if any themselves.
And so, probably a raised 911 with a rack is the answer. It’s been done, I’m sure there are all manner of companies out there producing such a thing so I don’t have to.
But since it’s effectively a modified car, maybe it’s sensible to just take a car and do it myself. An MR2 with a rack might be cool. It would seem sacrilege on an NSX - though not half as bad as the cheap mods people tend to do to them.
