I’ve transferred my Lego Miata design from LDD to an online Lego CAD program called Mecabricks, which is compatible with a rendering program called Blender, which will allow me to make nice, photorealistic images of the Lego Miata... if I can get the darn thing to install properly. This may take awhile. But in the meantime, the Miata is already looking a lot more like actual Lego in Mecabricks:

That’s looking pretty good!

This is amazing! So h ow the heck do you decide on a particular scale before doing your best to replicate it within the confines of the angles and curvatures that Lego bricks can afford?

Thanks! I usually look at a particularly difficult/prominent detail, try to build that, and then scale the rest based on it. Usually I start with the wheels , but in this case I started with the pop-up headlights and based the rest on the proportions of those because I figured they would be tricky to build in lots of different sizes. This worked out pretty well, although it did mean I only really had one tire option to choose from.

Yeah I imagine that some shapes would have been easier to recreate at other scales, b ut I think you made the right choice here . The headlights have got to be the NA’s m ost recognizable feature, and getting that right really helps sell any compromises you have to make in trying to convey the rest .

That's looking so much better. I really wonder about the low resolution render that LLD has. Such an iconic shape there.

Thanks! It’s almost ready for Lego Ideas. Just gotta get the rendering program to work so it will look its best :)

Got any plans to actually build it?

Possibly. I don’t have the parts on hand to do it, but someday I might order the parts. If it actually reaches 10,000 supporters and Lego decides to make it a set, then I’ll probably want to so that so I can compare my original design to the set.
