Long story short, the guy built a
Ford Ranger EV and a Volkswagen Beetle EV. It gives me hope that some
day I might actually build an EV as well.
I celebrated this newfound motivation by going to the garage and doing some woodworking. I’m currently making a table saw
box joint jig so that I can finish building a dresser for my youngest daughter. I’m hoping to have it finished before the end of the year.

I would like to prepare to build the old VW Transporter into an EV but the motor kit alone (that I've come across) is 11,500 Euro which translates into a lot of Australian dollars and then there's the batteries...suffice to say, spending fifty grand on a 20 year old car whose modern equivalents can be had for sixty grand does seem a little...nuts?

I'll build an ev when gas stations disappear, and not before.

I hear you. I'm hoping the Model 3 and Model Y sell like hotcakes so that I can eventually put an entire pack to use for cheap. I wish there were more choices for axial flux motors that also weren't so expensive.

I mean, it’s just a big RC car, right? (without the RC)

I mean... sort of. As usual, I think the devil is in the details. At least with an RC car, you aren’t going to electrocute yourself or burn your house down if something goes wrong.

At first I was going to give you a hard time, but I understand. They aren’t for everyone, and there is something ethereal about the sounds and smell of a properly tuned gas engine.

Ha! Good point.

Detached garage might be a good idea...

Already got one. :)

I don’t mind evs, I am pretty optimistic about the tech. Just really doesn’t have the IT factor for me and if I am pessimistic my cash is going to be pretty limited going forward . Most of my tastes are replicas and kit cars so depending on how that industry goes will change my outlook, but they tend to trend more towards older tech. EVs may lead to some really neat kit cars but I havent been excited about what's been shown. Came across as more harsh than I meant.

I meant moreso converting a gas car to electric than a pure electric build.

That didn’t come across as being harsh.
I’m really hoping that EVs will introduce more coachbuilding. Have all the mechanical gubbins in a skateboard, and allow people to build whatever they want on top. Hopefully that includes more kit cars and replicas. There’s so many cars that deserve to be out there more. Like the Mazda Furai. Yes, it wouldn’t be the same without the exhaust noise, but is still a great looking car. Or at least it was until Top Gear burned it to the ground.

I think the mechanical simplicity alone will go a large way towards making all that and more possible, and more approachable to the average joe. Plug n play as it were.

I’m excited to see more and more old cars given new life with electric engines and such, but money is important, and projects like that cost a whole awful lot (whether or not you do it yourself).
