Kinja'd!!!

The Canadian Domestic Market Acura EL sedan (fancified 7th gen Civic sedan) is a great example of what certain markets got that the U.S. didn’t, and one which I have an unnatural attraction toward.

Kinja'd!!!

The USDM Civic sedan of this generation is aesthetically turned down juuuuust a notch, but it’s enough that I feel it loses out completely in the desirability department.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

It’s the little things that count, darnit, and between things like the Acura EL and the following Acura CSX which was demonstrably closer in styling to the FD Type R Civic than the US’s 8th gen FA5 sedan, I simply can’t help but want to slide all up in Canada’s DMs.

We got the Honda Civic saloon like the U.S. one.

Honda did a slap-dash of adding a rear foglight.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Then the next gen we got this saloon,

next to the hatchback.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

The two couldn’t be more different

Did Canada get the RSX too?

Yeah, the FN hatchback is definitely ‘its own thing’! And the Civic sedan you got in that same generation is the style I prefer.  Interesting how y’all got a sort of mish-mash between that generation cross-over.

It appears the answer is yes, and with no significant aesthetic alterations.

That's the same Civic sedan of that gen we got except with some different styling to match the hatchback you got. I like the hatch's interior styling better than the sedans. I really don't like that generation if Civic or really anything about it and they are so boring to drive. Did you also get the coupe based on that gen?

Being in Europe as well as being RHD we got EDM and some JDM cars at our dealerships. So we got some cars Europe never got, while Europe made some cars in LHD only and never offered in the U.K. (and still do).

From what I’ve read, Honda Japan liked the styling of the CSX so much that they based the FD on it instead of the regular Civic.

No we just got it as a 3 and a 5 door hatchback.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

While all the saloons were petrol hybrids.

There is this lone petrol on Autotrader though.

2007 Honda Civic Type R

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Though from 2014, we got the estate in the nin th gen,

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

There was a three or four year crossover between the ninth and tenth gen Honda Civic.

So at one point you had a choice of 5 door Honda Civics.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Now, we just get the 5 door Civic.

I’m still waiting for VW people front end swap their MKII GTi’s with one from one of the many Chinese facelifts.

Whoa! I feel like I see a little Saab inspiration in the front end of that first one.

Speaking of MKII Golfs, didn’t South Africa VW keep it in production as the VW Citi or something like that until like 2008...?

I’d believe it! I only know of the Chinese one because I used to see them all the time when I lived there like 15 years ago. Even by 2005, MKII’s were old cars!

Yep. We have a few JDM DC5 Type-R rolling around now too with the 15y import law.

I haven’t noticed any EP3 Civic Type-R  yet.

We in Canada also got the Mk 4 VW Golf being continued to be sold for a bit while the Mk. 5 Golf was on sale....I think it was Brazilian-built and called the Citi Golf if memory serves? Had revised front and rear fascia...the rear wa s... something...

I really wanted to do an EL swap on my 6th gen coupe when I had it, but I never had the means to get it done.

I was never really a fan of the 8th gen Civic and I hate their interior styling but the 9th gen was where Honda really lost me. I have a friend with a 9th gen coupe like this except not at all sporty. Adequate power and a sea of bleh sun soaked gray upholstery.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

I find these cars to be quite ugly all around. One of the rare cases where I think a coupe that looks different than the sedan looks worse than the sedan. Decent back seat though.

Kinja'd!!!

And I also find your wagon and hatch variants on this gen to be pretty ugly as well. I just really dislike this era in Honda’s styling. The current one looks quite nice even if it is a bit busy, especially on the hatchback.

Kinja'd!!!

I think the current coupe is quite a looker even though many people don’t like them.

So weird when companies do that. I guess we had a bit of that in the states as well with domestic Chevrolets , mostly for fleet sales.

Back when I used to goto Canada (lol covid amirite?) I loved seeing the city golf, micra and X trail.  Forbidden fruit is so sweet.

We use d to have Mercury here until the mid-90s, but then Ford pulled it from our market, so you guys got a lot of domestic Mercury models we never got here and certain generations of cars we’d had that we never got.

I’m trying to think of any good mercuries, but it’s really only the “kinda good” Marauder and then the “well, it’s a sports coupe so that’s kinda cool I guess” Cougar.
