So my family (wife and kids) went up to a family function this last weekend in Idaho for my younger brother’s family event. They wore masks whenever they were inside (the only family to do so) and for the most part* were very good about the rules.
My yo unger brother called me today saying he’s positive for COVID and had symptoms the night most my family left.
So...that means I’ m under quarantine until we get negative results and even still from 7 days past that. It would be 14 days but because we were wearing masks the time limit is less. I wasn’t there, as I was a home doing homework but it’s going to affect us regardless.
Someone in my extended family is going to get sick, and I hope it doesn’t get serious.
I’ve written before about how my family sucks regarding this COVID thing and they even mocked my wife up there to a small extent for wearing a mask and my insistence
on protocols. Sure enough NONE of them wore masks at any time. Even my wife thinks I’m
over sensitive
and while I can’t agree I do say that I
try and accommodate
. We even had dinner at her parent’s
house Sunday night
where we wore masks anytime we weren’t eating, though
we didn’t wear them eating so that’s
nice to think about.
*Despite being very insistent that my wife be careful I saw pictures on IG of my daughter hugging my brother’s kids and playing with them on playground equipment outside without masks. Pretty upset about it, but what can I do.
So the kids are out of school now for a week, maybe more and I’m sure many of my brother and sister’s families (and all the people they’ve surely hung out with since) will be getting sick soon. Here’s hoping the masking was enough for us.
On the plus side, I think I am getting an A in my accounting class. So thats nice. Now I just have to finish a Finance pre-course so I can take Finance in a week. one down, many to go.

Sister in law just got married in a castle south of SLC, sure you know the place but it's all provo to me... Anyway there was about a hundred people there and less than ten of us in masks. Pretty worried about all the old folks that were there but haven't heard of any illness yet.

I’m really sorry to hear about the family “spreader”. Ouch. I don’t know what it is about the current environment that makes even “common sense” stuff so hard for people to get on board with. It’s inexplicable to me.
I count myself lucky to have bought (on a complete lark) two cases of the good 3M N95 masks during the Thomas Fire and associated haze in Santa Barbara three years ago. Sometimes I feel like the Thomas fire accidentally saved my life-- since I’ve been stretching my cases of N95s to the brink.

Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear that. That is exactly why I’ve been tremendously careful to always wear a mask at all times. I don’t really understand taking them off when you sit down indoors with your friends but I see it all the time. And like the masks off for posing? No idea how that makes sense.
Stay safe and keep us updated. If if it COVID, it will suck, but you’ll get through it.

The way I figure it is that people generally have adopted a timeline in their head that has us all gradually phasing out of this. It’s worse than it ever has been, but that’s not going to stand in the way of a person’s mental timeline.
There is definitely a prevailing momentum in a return to normalcy inspite of whats actually happening.

The one that really bugs me is people taking their masks off because it’ s hard to talk with it on. Like...” I’ m going to wear this mask until I need to blast my breath right at you okay?” No!

Dude, I’m so sorry. Keeping fingers crossed you guys don’t have it. Hopefully there are no serious cases. It is mind boggling how so many people have just shrugged their shoulders and gone with “it is what it is” attitude . Like if everyone wore bloody masks we’d be in such a better position in every sense. So bloody aggravating doing the right thing and still getting screwed over by other peoples bad decision making.
Good luck with classes.

kinda pisses me off because my younger brother sees patients (prosthetics) and yet he wasn’t wearing a mask the whole time up there. He should know better.

positive thoughts in your family’s direction -
We had dinner with my wife’s 94 yo grandmother last weekend. We knew h er son and his wife, (my wife’s folks,) were going to be there and they are both rural and conservative. My wife and I talked at length if we should go - and my wife is still pretty upset about the whole thing given the risk to her grandmother. It finally came down to the fact that if grandma is going to get covid, it would be from her son and his wife, not from us, and my wife and I don’t have kids so we were willing to take the risk for ourselves. It’s funny how dinner at grandma’s now causes lengthy life or death decisions...

Oh shit. Good luck and I'm grateful that we still don't have to live like that (caseload countrywide is just a few and community transmission is almost non existent outside Melbourne)

Or people who can’t talk on the phone with it on for some reason. But that’s not quite as unsafe but the principle is still deeply flawed.
But the nose peeking up above the mask is what really gets me.

Im wishing good health for you and your immediate family.
One thing ive learned through this is that even a bunch of highly educated/successful people (my general friend group give or take one or two degenerates) dont really seem to take this seriously.
We have a grand total of 4 friends who are taking this seriously and everyone else not so much.
So far, weve had one family member die, a coworkers grandmother is dead, and we know about 10 ppl who have had covid-19, most of them were hospitalized and it was awful.
Humanity..man, i dont know.

Well, and 94 years old, I mean, not many years left to just not see your family.

right - exactly, she really, really wants to see everybody. And to add some OPPOness, the last car she had was a wonderful little white reliant K-car.

Yes, exactly this. People think that things just should be going back to normal by now.

Oof. I’m sorry. Hopefully you all get negative results, but what a pain in the meantime.

My mom coughs a lot because she’s a heavy smoker and she pulls her mask away from her mouth to make it easier to cough.

I’ve been somewhat vocal about being pro-mask, though often in the context of “if we can be good about wearing masks, I see no reason to keep a shut down in effect.” With the obvious caveat being there’s the challenge to places where the activity you’re there for requires mask removal to do it (eat/drink).
In practice, I wear one when greeting customers, but when it’s back to turning wrenches, no one is around, I don’t worry about it. I put the mask on if I’m going inside anywhere. It’s all easy, common-sense enough.
The occasional visit with family I typically don’t bother wearing a mask either, knowing for the most part they’re just working and then going home with minimal contact with groups of people.
At the same time, the main reason for wearing a mask is less about preventing yourself from getting it, it’s most effective to prevent the wearer from spreading it, but of course that only works if everyone else around you is wearing one as well...
Knock on wood, no one in my immediate family has contracted it yet. But I do know of a couple people who have, most of whom don’t live anywhere nearby.

DANG!!!
My in-laws met with my daughter at her college this past weekend and of course, sent a picture with everyone unmasked. THEY KNOW BETTER! The only saving grace is that my daughter was tested last week in preparation for a trip home for a long weekend. But now we have to be careful about her coming home.
I had a discussion with an engineer about wearing his mask. Despite it being company policy, he wasn’t wearing his because he thought he would be the only one in the office that early in the morning. He asked me, seriously, if the smell of a fart could get through his pants and I could smell it through my mask , then how could I expect it to stop a virus. I couldn’t believe I had to explain SIZE and SCALE to a frickin’ engineer. I should have just asked him if he’s blowing clouds of bacteria everywhere or if he thought his underwear was catching everything but the smell.
Stupidity abounds, even among the educated.
