After 5 years of owning Miatas I finally took one to the track! The track in question is the Lake Garnett circuit from the 50s with 50s era lack of safety. 100mph track limit, 40mph limit by the dam. Very happy with how the Miata performed. Here’s a couple laps unedited, full video of the event with more track footage and some sweet vintage racecars (including a legit AC Shelby cobra!) coming next week.

Miata details:

2008 NC Grand Touring PRHT

Koni shocks

Progress Technology springs

RX8 yellow-dot sway bars

RX7 FD “hollowspoke” wheels

Bridgestone Potenza RE71R

GWR “Race” single-exit muffler

Custom tuned in my garage (mostly fiddled with rev limit, throttle maps, slightly more aggressive VVT, couple degrees of timing)

Motul RBF600 with unknown cheap brake pads and stock lines

Yeah, that place as sketchy af. Real tracks don’t have speed limits, they also don’t let spectators stand 5ft from the track and don’t have stone walls on the track edges.

Heartland Park in Topeka looks like the only proper circuit in Kansas though, Hallet in OK might not be too far for you depending on where in Kansas you are.

You could always road trip down to Texas, Eagles Canyon Raceway in Decatur is very nice:

Yeah. I need to get to a TNIA event but they’re all during the week and I have a 9-5 :/

You’d be better off going to an actual trackday event with instructors, TNiA is a terrible place to learn how to drive on track since there is no meaningful instruction (it’s a great way to get a little extra seat time if you already have an idea of what you are doing and what you need to work on).

A typical instructed track day here in Texas costs $200-$300 for entry fees and there are both one day and two day events (if you’re traveling a two day event might be better since you can drive in the Friday before and spend the weekend).

Looks like a semi-sketchy good time! They need to remove the speed limits and have an all-out ‘Isle of Man’-type event. And by ‘ need’ , I mean “actually, please don’t”.
