Driver escaped unharmed.

We pulled off the highway in Georgetown to hit the restrooms and somehow managed to time things so we didn’ t get stuck between the exit and this but also got on the frontage road before everyone they were detouring off of I-70. The heat from the fire was insane.

For some reason, this reminds me of once when I happened to bypass a California agricultural customs stop because I took an exit prior to it and veered off to what was effectively a feeder road that took me past the checkpoint (I was intrigued by the tiny little town just off the freeway). I had a good chuckle at that.

Glad to hear the driver got away okay!

Holy cow. Glad the driver is okay and you didn’t get stuck behind it.

When I was working in the oilfield, I ordered a float of gel for the job. It never showed up. The next morning I was told the gel wouldn’t be showing up because the truck caught fire. Apparent ly the trailer brakes overheated and caught fire. About half a million dollars up in flames.

Was this today? I drove through that area yesterday morning and there was a semi pulled over and a cop hitting his brakes with what looked like an extinguisher. Gassed up in Vail and the whole station smelled like burnt brakes from everyone riding them all the way down the pass.  You’d think Coloradans would know how to drive through mountains.

I just saw a semi with flaming brakes on the same stretch of highway as the OP Thursday morning.

This afternoon, yeah. We stopped and traffic was normal and literally 5 minutes later this inferno had shut down 70. Thankfully it didn’t spread.

I desperately miss being able to downshift and cruise down the passes. Second is a bit low.

At least they read the signs to NOT exit at Georgetown if the brakes are going. Holy moly that looks intense.

That, as they say, is not good.

Yeah, I guess a lot of it comes from modern autos being geared towards fuel economy and not allowing a whole lot of engine breaking.

I feel like there used to be a “runaway truck ramp” (deep gravel shoulder) eastbound  before they started all the construction. Did I make that up?

Well, what do you expect when you drive a Rosso  Corsa truck?

I do a run to the western slope once a week and I’ve seen a lot of burned semis. And cars, for that matter.

The one thing that FCA really nailed on the ProMaster is how well it uses engine braking. It’s by far the best vehicle I’ve ever driven over the divide. I’m at about 164k miles on it, and I just did my front brakes for the first time. They still had plenty of pad left. ( I do probably 80-90 percent highway miles.) That van automatically shifts down when you’re coasting whether you’re in cruise control or not and I love it. Meanwhile , if I’m driving my truck down the mountain it will just keep accelerating to warp 3 even if I lock out overdrive.
