The owner was my hero. We stopped off at a California Mission Church— to worship these Bavarian monks, heros to purity and all automotive virtue .
California dreamin’ (California dreamin’)
On such a winter’s day
Stopped into a church
I passed along the way
Well, I got down on my knees (got down on my knees)
And I pretend to pray (I pretend to pray)
You know the preacher like the cold (preacher like the cold)
He knows I’m gonna stay (knows I’m gonna stay)
California dreamin’ (California dreamin’)
On such a winter’s day

I love E9s so much. I wish BMW had half the styling now that these have.

E34. It was a damn awesome swap.
I’ve never seen that car around here since, either.

I used to say that my ultimate dream car was an e-type, but now that I have reached a certain age I think that folding myself up to get into low little sports cars just doesn’t quite work well, doable, but sort of detracts from the experience. I think the E9 may have replaced the E-type on the lust list, and that is not an easy thing for me to say. I would be fine with a stock example, and more than fine with a later en gine, as long as it is a BMW straight six.

If the designers of these could see the 2021 BMW lineup, they’d jump out the window.

Handling is a valid question. And they were heavier than you’d have thought.
I had a guy recently suggest a Bavaria as a reasonably priced alternative, but even they are hard to find these days.

Yeah. This. E9 was such an elegant design language.

The E9 with M5 power, was it this one?

The hardtop helps a lot. Sometimes I think safety regs have made hardtops unworkable, but MB has had at least one in production for 60 years, so it must be workable somehow.

I actually have a Beta Coupe sitting here. Yes, it’s a POS. But, man, in that coupe form it has the sweetest, dainty A-pillars. A wonderful “light” look.
They would undoubtedly collapse in milliseconds in a rollover.

Just don’t crash, and you’ll be fine.
It seems something was lost when design transitioned to being aided by computers. That, and I think stylists being copycats is now more a thing than ever.
