I’ve got a friend with a 4Runner on that platform that he got for real cheap because it wouldn’t have lasted another northern winter without structural problems developing. Problem is we live in Georgia so even a desirable 4x4 4Runner is nearly impos s ible to get rid of with any rust. And it doesn’t have AC. And it has a black interior.
But all those plastic parts that haven’t disintegrated from UV exposure are getting much less common so there’s that. It looks better than 90% of its contemporaries from 10 feet away but then you see the rust and all of a sudden the good paint and plastics don’t matter anymore.

If it’s made out of steel and you get it wet, it will rust. Also if you keep it com pletely dry too, somehow that’s worse. Also if you make any effort to abate rust, you’re just taunting the rust. Let the rust do the driving, it’s a dirty, sassy rust.

If anyone knows this to be true, it is you.
I'd argue a car should be well watered, always. Seems to work for Georgia at least. Cloud cover gives your headlights a few more months before they fog over again from UV damage.

Can’t imagine trying to free oneself from a no-AC T4R in Georgia, even if it wasn’t rusty. The rust makes it so much worse.
Mine is 2wd, and I usually don’t drive it between Dec-Mar here in the land of salt. The rust is still getting worse on the body. Luckily the frame is only 2 years old. GF, an insurance adjuster, said that frame replacement on my truck was worth about $9k in parts and labor, on a truck I paid $7k for 6 years ago.

When I got my 2003 Volvo S40, I was very interested in the Protege5, but ended up not looking at it because the nearest Mazda dealer was around an hour away. From what I’ve heard since it sounds like that was fortunate, I might just have had a pile of iron oxide after a few U pstate New York winters. Meanwhile when the Volvo was totaled by flooding 14.5 years later, the only significant rust was on the exhaust, plus some bubbling of the paint on a place on the quarter panel where I had cracked the (previously repaired) quarter panel, and on the trunk handle (which had been replaced and painted following getting rear-ended).

Yeah, despite being a supremely desirable V6 4x4 Limited trim with the black interior , it’s got some either very broken or nonexistent AC and 220k miles with significant frame rust so it’s not really worth anything. It can’t be an off-road beater because o f the rust and it can’t be a good daily because no AC. It was still worth the $400 he paid for it from a relative though.
I’ve got another friend with an old Honda Pilot, also at 220k, with no AC. Similarly it’s really only worth more than scrap value because it hasn’t broken. It’s pretty thrashed and unlike the 4Runner 20 years of Georgia sun doesn’t even leave it presentable at 10 feet but it has given him lots of trouble free miles.

They have been getting less common but parts are cheap and plentiful so you see lots as affordable beaters. The V6 Mazda6s have mostly vanished to the same fate as my brother's V6 6.

If you take care of it it’s not that bad. I’m getting some typical rust spots on the bottom of the doors, rear fender and around one tail light like 1/4" x 1/2" spot. This is after 8 wet and snowy winters with mag chloride on the roads. My car is 14 years old too, I mean what do you expect?

I haven’t had much of an issue with rust yet, strangely. And Phoebe is almost always parked outside. I guess Idaho is just surprisingly friendly to old cars. It’s dry enough that rust can be avoided but not so dry that paint and interiors turn to dust. They do salt the roads in the winter though, which sucks. I’ll have to keep driving to a minimum when the snow falls.

Yeah be careful about that. Wouldn’t want Phoebe to start getting crusty on you.
Georgia may be good on the rust front but you wouldn’t believe what it does to plastic and interiors. You really need to use a sunshade if you want to prolong a car's lifespan.

Phoebe’s dash was already cracked when I bought her, though I still want to keep the rest of the interior in decent shape for as long as possible. It’s only original once... I think Phoebe has a little rust in the passenger side footwell, maybe a hole or two because the carpet gets a little wet when I drive through a puddle. Then there’s some surface rust in the rear fenders, and a few spots under the trunk seal where it’s rusted through. But that’s about it. Otherwise, she’s solid.

It’s a great state but it sure is hard on cosmetics. Poor Geoff gets too much sun for his own good. At just 6 years old the chromed plastic trim was absolutely roasted and the finish is in the early stages of going off of some of the plastic switchgear. Not too bad a showing for the conditions and price bracket. He’s weathered it much better than most cars would have. Looking at you, Hyunkia with your painted doorhandles and plastic pillar trim.

I live in a place that gets maybe 2 in of snow a year. But I also live in a city if transplants (as in NO ONE is from Atlanta) so I see a lot of cars that have spent time up north. Toyotas rust quite badly but it usually doesn’t show through the body work. Their frames just disintegrate.
Meanwhile GMT 400 based trucks like the 2000s Silverados are easy to spot. Their rockers and bed sides often just completely vanish from rust so you can see straight through the doors. Those northern states are real hard on cars with all that road salt.
Toyota trucks also have an excellent reputation here but the plastics they used aren’t the best at sun exposure and their paint can be suspect . Do you have a lot of trouble with UV damage on your cars down there?

It definitely is a lot better than it used to be but around 6-8 years cars that are always outside and rarely parked in the shade down here often start to display signs of premature aging on plastics and rubbers. If you don’t treat those things and use a sunshade, the sun will claim them sooner than you’d expect. And some cars have more problems than others. Like 2010s Hyunkias with faded pillar trim and clearcoat issues on painted doorhandles.
My own car is starting to show its age with the plastics at 8 years old. I’ve mostly fixed the terrible headlights but the chromed plastic is ruined and the previous owner didn’t use a sunshade so the interior plastics are damaged. And the rubber seal along the roof panel and trunk lid is totally shot.
