Different in others.
Both are relatively alone in a world where M&A and multi-brand groups are the norm.
They both have one mainstream brand and one mediocre premium brand.
They(like everyone else) need to invest huge amounts of money in future mobility solutions.
They like to go racing but don’t really have much money to do so.
They complete each other on markets around the world.
A merger or a Renault-Nissan type alliance only seems natural. They could get economies of scale, work out synergies and develop more competitive cars, as they would share the development costs.

Nice C8s....
One must be the Z06 and the other, now-canceled, Grand Sport?

Meh. That's nothing. The model should be Renault-Nissan's Global alliance.

Sadly, I don’t think the slapdash nature of Ford would ever gel with the precision and reliability of Honda......

If you say so
, but do you think Ford would be game for a Honda partnership while they’re partnered with GM?

The argument could go the same way with GM except that they have two mediocre premium brands (if you count Buick as one...), is GMC really anything more than a Chevrolet with a different trim level?
But where do Ford like to race?
They are not even directly making their own rally cars !

Hard to tell. I'm only saying such an alliance would make more sense than a partnership meant to produce a couple of market specific electric cars.

Ford and Honda are polar opposites.
Regardless of specs and features, Ford cars are generally shitheaps, and even their best products have some of that inherent shittiness baked in. Honda cars are generally good and competent and sometimes excellent, and even their worst products have some or more of that inherent goodness baked in.
All the American manufacturers have some inherent shittiness, but GM at least has some seriously good chassis engineering, and Mopar has some unique products. Ford is just kinda shitty while occasionally offering above-average horsepower in certain segments.

Will be interesting to see if this GM-Honda deal turns into anything else.

Ford also owns Troller, so that's one mainstream brand, one mediocre luxury brand, and one weirdo single model 4x4 brand.

Mazda is feeling a little left out of this discussion. And Subaru are muttering randomly to themselves in a corner...
Ford have already tied themselves to VAG for commercial ICE and electric powered vehicles so they are really only a couple of platforms away from a committed relationship given who they are playing with.
