i went to open the sunroof on my car. While the windows open in after turning to the first position, the sunroof needs the second position. I accidentally turned to the third position and to my surprise , the car started even though I did not have my foot on the brake. WTF is with that? (2012 Ford Focus B oring)

M ost autos don’t need a foot on the brake. When I worked at the dealership and we had snow removal days, we’d just lean into the cars and turn them on via the key
Push button start cars DO require braking, so for the trucks, we just lean in, put your left hand on the brake, and hit the start button with your right hand.

Yeah, it sounds like you’re referring to the standard key ignition switch and I don’t think I’ve ever been in a * non-manual*, that required anything but the key rotation to start. Push buttons need a foot on the br ake and getting out of park (slush-box) requires foot on the br ake since ~ the late 80s.

Don’t start the car, it’s causing pollution.

I always hold the brake when I start the car but most automatics don’t require it when it park and won’t let you take the key out of the ignition in drive so it’s a pretty idiot-proof system if you disregard neutral being temptingly close to park.

Most cars with the old ‘key in the ignition’ jive could start without the brake being depressed as I recall.
