With my boxing gym classes kicking my butt and getting me in to shape, I always wanted to give the actual ring a try. The boxing scene seem like they take their stuff a little too serious for someone that simply wants to get in the ring once or twice. Plus, my zero fighting experience will definitely lead to me getting my head caved in.

But then there’s this:

Kinja'd!!!

Rough N’ Rowdy is a boxing event catered towards the average joes like me that just want to put on some gloves and swing at someone. The match consists of three one minute rounds, and you cannot have any amateur, semi pro, or professional experience in any combat sports.

Put in my application just now. No idea if I’ll get selected. But if I do, I have less than two weeks to figure out how to actually box, and not hit a heavy bag for 30 minutes. Time to hit up youtube.

Boxing is way more fatiguing than I ever anticipated. My arms are rubber after even a few minutes of boxing. Give me standard karate sparing any day of the week with lightweight gloves and booties and groin cup.

Best is to get some sparing partners and hit each other for a while to get used to actually fighting for real.

S ome sparing pointers:

1. always hit for real, none of this fake love tap shit, every hit should count

2. keep your blocking arm firm, nothing like getting punched in the face with your own glove

3. enjoy, it’s a game like any sport and I did it for fun, sure take it seriously but remember why you are doing it.

That’s my biggest worry: I don’t know how I’ll react when hit. I’ve been in tussles before, but those were usually after a few beers with the guys. Curious to see how I’ll take punches. Good tip on the block arm. Thanks!

Sounds like my kind (I just stopped playing rugby after 18 years) of stupid fun. Please report back and let us know how it goes.

if I make it, I’ll share the link to the PPV. $20 gets you almost 3 hours of amateur fights. They’re always fun to watch

Go for it. You’ll only find out what’cha got if you get into the ring. Answer that question while you’re young enough. Like some have said, take a few punches in practice to see how you react and punch the bag 100 times full power to test your arms. Good luck to ya!

I’m a big fan of MMA - UFC, Bellator, LFA, etc . The art that is one-on-one warfare is a beautiful and brutal dance to watch. Recently, though, I’ve found some regional YT vids. They’re wild, untutored affairs that also have an entertainment value. Particularly the girls; d amn, they are brutal!

While I don’t have actual combat sports experience, my time in the USMC and going through a police academy provided plenty of time in gloves sparing with folks.

2-3 minutes in the ring with someone may well be the most intense workout you’ll ever have. My recommendation would be to study up on, and get some practice in, learning your angles of movement and learning to block. Your instinct may likely be to stand there and fight, but moving will be critical to any success fighting.  I’d offer the big thing to really work on throwing punches is to make sure you’re not dropping your other hand when throwing a punch.  An opponent with any skill is going to pop you in the nose with a jab every time you try to throw a punch if you’re dropping the other hand.

A friend of mine wanted to try that, back in the days . He was very fit, had some “ experience” in actual bar fights, and got his @ handed to him by a redneck wearing jeans and cowboy boots.

It’s harder than it looks ... Best of luck to you !

I’d get absolutely ass blasted if I stepped into a ring, but I’ll be cheering for you. Just keep your hands up.

I used to spar with an ex marine at our dojo and they guy was strong as hell. He had a hard time getting rid of his habits but did manage to crack my nose during our blue belt test. First time I’d ever been  body slammed. Good times!

Valid point. I had one shot to nail it, and didn’t want to botch the shot by not getting the can open. I’ll caveman the beers when I win.

Seems the common advice is keeping the hands up. I might just walk around the next to weeks with both hands up at all times! lol Thanks for the tips

The girls that enter this always put on a great show. There was one match with this 40 year old lady with almost all of her teeth missing knock the crap out of a competitive weight lifter. The place was going nuts for her!

My advise is to switch from a fitness boxing gym to an actual boxing gym ASAP. An actual boxing gym will have at least one real boxing ring  and will host sparring events for members several times a week.

I’m with you there. The issue is not many gyms are open in the area. The even harder issue is open gyms are very limited in their capacity due to Covid protocals. I reached out to two different gyms in the area that do boxing training. Even for the two-ish weeks prior to the event, I’d be down to pay for a personal boxing trainer if available. The hard part is finding one.
