Breaking news: Tesla’s cars cost too much
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! reports on Tesla’s often ignored and less talked about elephant in the room: the monopoly they hold on the EV market. The write that them being the eternity of the market means that Tesla might not ever face any actual competition from any car company, even though nearly every major automaker on the planet is gunning for them. From the article: “ In the electric-vehicle space, however, demand isn’t being met. It’s almost impossible to buy an affordable, new EV, one that costs less than $500 per month on a typical auto loan. Tesla’s cheapest Model 3 sedan is $38,000 .”
Germany’s leading auto publication pretty much said the new VW ID.3 sucks
One of the first publications in the world to test VW’s new make it or break it EV, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! was harsh on the quality of the car criticizing its fit & finish. “ The inner side of the hood looks like it was painted with a spray can .” Sheesh. Granted it might be a pre production model but still, that’s too easy of an excuse.
Ford is pretty much bribing workers to be laid off
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that Ford, in an effort to lay off 1400 before the end of the year, is offering severance payments to employees. Not any employee could just say they wanted to take it however. Certain requirements have to be met. From the article:
Active full-time U.S. salaried employee at work on or after Sept. 1, 2020, and if inactive as of Sept. 1, 2020, returned to active status at work on or before Sept. 30, 2020;
In a Leadership Level 3 - 6 (middle management) or general salary roll position as of Sept.1, 2020, and through the date of separation; and
If hired or rehired prior to Jan.1, 2004, as of Dec.31, 2020, had:
Reached age 55 and had 10 years of credited service under the Ford Motor Company General Retirement Plan (GRP); or
Reached age 65 and had 1 one year of credited service under the GRP; or
Had 30 years of credited service under GRP; or
If hired or rehired on or after Jan.1, 2004, as of Dec.31, 2020, had:
Reached age 55 and had 10 years of service with the company; or
Reached age 65 with 5five years of service with the company; and
Fall within an area that management has selected for participation in “this voluntary separation program” and no critical skill or talent excludes participation.
The moves are a part of Ford reshuffling to meet the disappointment that has been 2020 for profits.
The insaneness of crossovers continues at BMW. An X8 is coming
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , its expected to be a variant of the X7. They report that its going to be a Q8 competitor. So another large, heavy as hell, less practical in the name of sportiness super expensive crossover. They also state that its a hybrid, as the disguised prototype had “hybrid test vehicle” on the rear. They also report that an X8 M is coming as well through recent trademark filings. No word on power or when this thing is expected to arrive but it can take its time.
VW wants to sell half a million ID.4’s per year
In what can be described as lofty goals, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! reports that VW CEO Ralf Brandstätter wants 1.5 million EV sales per year by ‘25, with 500k of those being the ID.4. That’ s a lot of vehicles in a short span of time. It might be doable if this is talking worldwide sales, but I wouldn’ t hold my breath if this is US sales they are hoping for.
Cadillac CT5 sales somehow suck and are midpack at the same time
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! h as sales numbers from Q2 of 2020 for CT5 sales. No surprise that they aren’t impressive. With 2,575 sales in Q2 of 2020, those numbers place it 6th out of 17th (Behind the Infiniti Q50 and ahead of the Genesis G70) in the entry lux segment. However its YTD of 5,575 places it in the exact same 6th place spot.
WRX drivers had more speeding tickets than other drivers last year
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! reported that insurance comparison platform Insurify looked over 2 million insurance records from 2019. They found that nearly 21% of WRX owners surveyed had speeding tickets, more than any other group. From the article : “People who drive the Volkswagen GTI and Subaru Impreza were also among the most prone to speeding tickets, with 17.38% and 15.9% of those owners carrying a citation. The automobile brand with the most models in the top 10 is Dodge, with four.
The Dodge Dart, Dodge Challenger, Dodge RAM 2500 and Dodge Charger are also on the list.” So its not the cars you would think that are speeding.

Chargers, Challengers, and RAM 2500s are quite commonly speeding in SoCal. I’m not surprised at all by that result.
I think the WRX/STI suffers from its unique look and wing in getting more speeding tickets. It would be interesting to see how often WRX owners are stopped by police compared to other models. My guess is that the car’s distinctive look and public stereotypes of hooliganism lead to more traffic stops than the average car model.

I have more moving violations that I will publicly admit to. 95% of them were in my 05 wrx and then 04 STi. Those cars can make anyone drive fast, also I was 19 years old when I bought the WRX and 22 by the time I traded in the STi so there is that

Oh yea I almost get tired of seeing Scat Packs racing around. Its all you hear at night too. Them racing off in the distance on the empty freeways. Its even GT trims now with custom exhausts racing.
I think you may be right. Its boy racer looks get it attention. Which is wrong if drivers aren’ t speeding.

Tesla - economies of scale and whatnot.
ID.3 - corners be cuttin
Layoffs - may as well take it, because 2021 hooooodawgy
X9 - Audi will build a “Q9" within a few years, you’ll see
CT5 - do Caddies sell outside of the midwest or Florida?
WRX - well yeah!

I wouldn’ t be surprised if a Q9 came. It’ll officially be the end of the world when that happens.
And as for the CT5 they do. I’ ve been surprised at the number of them I’ ve been seeing here in Southern California. I see at least one everyday.

Yea that has to be be pre production. It has to be. Because if that makes it to production and they couldn’ t even bother to properly spray the hood right, I have no hope for the tech.

Tesla owners happily spend hours post-purchase fixing their panel gaps. Maybe VW was hoping their customers would do the same with paint?

Street racing is so counterproductive for enthusiasts. SoCal is pretty lean on the “ racetracks to enthusiasts ratio” and so lots of people end up street racing instead of taking things to a track.
I’ve never been pulled over in my bright blue MR2, nor in my blacked-out Camaro. I don’t know a single Subaru friend who hasn’t been ticketed. If the WRX/STI shared the Impreza’s taillight design, it might not be as big of a problem.

Yea I don’t get it. Might have something to do with money. But even then it’s easier to just race late at night. Especially inland. Where you have miles of empty streets surrounding warehouses.

The #1 selling EV of all time is the Nissan Leaf.
Tesla’s build quality is garbage, and so are Elon’s antics. The only reason people tolerate that shit is because they don’t use dealers.
If I was going to buy an EV, it would be a Leaf, Volt, or i3 Rex.

I don’t think the looks are that much of a factor in the Subarus getting lots of tickets. The way turbo Subarus are tuned, they encourage you to use the power by making it a pain in the balls to drive slowly - (in mine) the throttle is tuned such that over 30% throttle, it goes for full boost as early as possible and out of boost it’s a bit of a dog. I drive with cruise control on at pretty much all times, otherwise I’d easily cruise at 50% over the limit waaay to often.
I’m sure the stereotypes don’t help but I’ve been pulled over once in 4 years of owning mine (knock on wood), and that was for my front plate having fallen off (tackled a few too many snowbanks).
I’m pretty sure the only reason the Impreza is on the list is because prior to 2015 WRXs and STIs were still Imprezas on paper, rather than their own model as they are now, because the regular car is slow AF.
All that said, my insurance is fucking expensive because so many WRX drivers are asshats, apparently, and I don’t like it.

It doesn’t it doesn’t help that every WRX owner seems to put a wide open exhaust on their car. I get in more trouble when I have a loud car than when I have a bright colored one or one with a spoiler.

Yeeeeeeahhhhh... everyone I know in .de who’s futzed with an ID.3 has said that they seem kinda cheaply made? The collective opinion seems to be “admirable idea, meh execution.”
(I should try to translate that AMuS piece and see if they’re saying what I’m hearing.)

That’s some Mitsubishi Mirage-ass cheapness without the bargain-basement price tag to justify it.

They seem to wanted to go the Beetle route with the ID.3. “ EVs for the masses”. Except that they took that in the quality sense. From what I read of the article, the electronics are shit and the quality of everything, including fit & finish & panel gaps, isn’ t what they expected of VW.
What’ s more surprising is that a survey at the end of the article found that 51% of people said they would get an 8th gen Golf over the ID.3. 33% said they would choose the ID.3

I hate to break it to you (and anyone else reading this), but that’s completely normal. You just normally don’t see this as the hood usually has soundproofing/fireproofing matting on it, so you don’t see the very middle of the hood.
This method of not painting every square inch not only saves a few bucks (paint adds up), but weight (again, every gram counts), and it doesn’t speak to quality at all.
This is also even more prevalent because of the color.

True. And with this being an EV it wouldn’ t have the fireproofing under the hood due to no ICE. None of this though explains away the other quality issues they saw.

The electronics were bad like you pointed out. They said it drove good on the street and thought the range was good. But they pointed out fit and finish was lacking too. Things like the seats already looking worn and body panel gaps. They also said it costs too much.

I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt on the fit an finish and assume it was a pre-production model. I watched the autogefuehl review of it and he didn’t mention any issues on his. But he did criticize it for having more hard plastic than the Golf 8 (which also has more hard plastic than the 7).
The cost thing is kind of laughable since it’s a new EV and shit is going to be expensive.
But on the first note, if my ID4 comes out bad I’ll come back and let you know lol.
