Gen. Coupe died so the Genesis brand could live

At that time, Hyundai promised some sort of sporty interpretation under the Genesis brand. It never happened. And the Genesis brand itself can’t find a n identity for itself. Perhaps Hyundai believed the task of establishing a premium brand, easier than it actually is?

Too bad, I used to have one of those. Wasn’t terrible for the price (they were cheap on the used market).

The Genesis brand will be totally fine as soon as they start selling SUVs like every other luxury brand. The sedans are getting increasingly good but as we all know sedans are on the decline. Look no farther than the Hyundai Palisade and especially Kia Telluride to see the future of Genesis sales.

Thought they were just doing the original Lexus plan?

It could’ ve been like a Korean Silvia/200SX. Too bad they killed the 2.0T Track version after the first year (like the R-spec but with more stuff like a sunroof).

Had they offered the V8 on it, it c ould’ve been a modern Korean Muscle car

I’ve SERIOUSLY considered a Genesis Coupe on more than one occasion . Initially because of Hyundai’s ridiculous warranty, then later because of how cheap they were second hand. How were the inputs? How is steering and pedal feel? How’s the clutch? Can you feel the road at all through the controls? Is it predictable in a slide? I’ve driven one, but not in a spirited manner and I honestly don’t remember how it felt. The 911 I drove that same night made me forget about the little Hyundai.

They are super affordable. You can pick up a 300hp V6 for the same price as any Toyobaru of the same year.

The Stinger and not Hyundai N have picked up the torch after the Genesis coupe.

It’s a GT car, so not great. The clutch sucks, the original autos were better to get than their manual. Don’t get this if you want a sports car, keep saving for a Cayman.

I see; that’s disappointing. I can forgive plenty faults if a car communicates well, but I can’t stand a numb, disconnected driving experience.

I’m sure with the RWD platform you can mod it into a decently sporty car.  They’re already old enough to be out of warranty anyway.

I have no doubt that one would be fun to hoon in, I just wonder if there’s something else in a similar genre that would provide more feedback along with the RWD antics. Maybe a G35/37?

Seriously. Their SUV looks like it’ll be a crazy hot seller. Once people start seeing them out on the road a ton of people are going to go “yeah I gotta have that”. It looks crazy up market and unique.

I dailied a 350Z for 13+ years. It has great steering feedback and a linear throttle, though it has some rev hang. The primary complaint is understeer on those cars, though if you just swap to a square setup (stock 20mm stagger) you can easily fix that.

Another downside is that they’re heavier than a miata or a BRZ or a boxster or whatever. The Z feels less eager to turn in and generally slower in its reactions. But predictability is the other side of that coin. I’m not even exaggerating when i say i threw oppositelock at the car hundreds of times without incident. Apparently 03-05 have oil pump issues, so avoid those.

And of course you’ll have to drive it first to see if its something you like. Some people just can’t stand them and that’s okay. But I think it’s one of the better platforms available for an all around performance car on a budget.

I actually quite liked the Genesis Coupe....a friend has one and it’s been pretty good t o him...not the best sports car, but certainly not bad!

It is what it is. There’ s a reason it was inexpensive. While not a sports car, some fun can be had in it. And I’m sure if you replaced the suspension, diff, clutch, and trans fluid it would be better. Can’t do much with the power steering mind you, but it’s far from the worst steering I’ve experienced . I used it as a reliable DD, and some slippy fun was had in the winter lol

That’s a long term relationship for sure. It must have been good to stick with it for so long. I think manufacturers throw the staggered set ups on cars like these to add a measure of safety to inexperienced throttle jockeys. I really like the 350/370Z’s, but I don’t think I’d buy something with only a pair of seats. That’s where the G series catches my eye. It’ll weight more and lose some dynamics compared to the Z, but I’d imagine it still captures most of the fun while offering extended usability and practicality. I wonder why they aren’t the answer more often.

I daily drove my ‘98 Z28 longer than anything else because it always entertained me and made me feel like a teenager every time I fired the LS1 up. Surprisingly, the car had great steering, a nicely weighted, linear throttle and you had some feel in the brakes. Throttle induced oversteer was also predictable and always felt controlled. It really was a contrast compared to snap oversteer happy, numb steering SN95 Mustangs I had previously.

Thanks for the insight! What platform did you move to after the your 350Z?

I hear you on winter fun. I did a few years in northeastern PA in my Z28 before buckling down and throwing studded snows on it. You make a great point. Hyundai built an affordable, approachable RWD platform with plenty power to hoon, plenty potential to build upon and the reliability to keep it on the road without spending a fortune. It was pretty killer that they built the thing in the first place. What did you move on to after your e xodus from Genesis?

I remember reading reviews of those 90s camaros, they were very clearly a better car than the contemporary mustang. Doesn’t surprise me a bit that they handled better, though if I’m being honest I harbor a very small amount of pro-GM, anti-Ford bias.

I’d assume the G35 coupe is pretty similar, but I honestly haven’t driven one. I do know they should have better interior quality which was another weak point on the Z.

After I got rid of the Z (though honestly it went to a family member, I couldn’t stand to see it permanently leave my life) I picked up a BMW M2 competition as a “check every box” kinda car. So far so good, but I am constantly terrified and looking over my shoulder for that monster called “German running costs.” The plan had been for a Supra, but I just couldn’t do it with an auto, and by that point I’d already resigned myself to driving a German car.
