Semi related. All these new houses / condos with 5 textures or colors on the outside are horse shit.

My mind will not be changed and I cant wait for this “design” fad to pass.

You are appreciated.

Thank you for not making the world uglier.

My apartment complex has:

Stone

Red concrete

Red brick

Orange-ish /yellowish b rick

Light brown wood siding

Cream paneling

Tan paneling

Black paneling

Orange paneling

Orange corrugated panels

Not all of these are found on all three buildings, but most of them are.

I understand not wanting to just have a monolithic complex, and the different material textures do break things up, but they really should have stuck to three-four per building, tops (unless they were trying to make each building appear as multiple different buildings, which is not what they were doing).

Just think, for the low, low, price of $257,500 (that’s the last sold price on Redf in for a unit here, sold May 1, 2020 ) you could get the opportunity to live in a 1 bed, 1.5 bath 1200 square foot condo in the middle of the city, right on a main road, so sirens will  wake you up every night and you’ll probably get mugged at least once a year. I like this city a lot, but damn would I not wanna live downtown.

Breaking up that mass would take a little design work, which is why most just slap a bunch of shit on there and call it a day.  Our eyes have to see it tho.

Which is why I moved to the suburbs ASAP. Sure, I'm surrounded by a bunch of retiree busybodies, but I sleep soundly every night and I haven't been mugged once.

I am totally okay with driving 25 or so minutes to get to work if it means I can have wooded frontage, space for shenanigans that would never be permitted in the city (having eighteen vehicles, mostly), and peace and quiet.

Downtown city living usually comes with less space and more noise. But theres just no excus es for lazy design, esp. when you’re paying a lot for it.

For example, these Mies’ in Detroit go for $350k for a 3 bed townhouse.

So clean.

Sirens and vehicle noises are pretty easy to live with. I do live above a grocery store, and the beeping as trucks making deliveries back up is somewhat annoying. The biggest noise problem here is that the grocery store has an outdoor seating area, with metal furniture that they drag away and lock up with a metal chain at night, so at 8ish in the morning there’s a lot of noise as they scrape all the metal across the concrete to get things set up again. I have been wondering if I could buy them a thick coated steel cable to replace their chain, I think it would quiet things down a lot.

257 seems cheap...really cheap. You can’t by a crack den for that here. A 10 year old condo in Fort Langley is... a lot. Even accounting for the CAD to USD

You can get used to it for sure, but I lived in the flight path of the life flight chopper of the local hospital (which was about 2000 feet from my place) for a year and a half. Never got used to the noise late at night. Depends on the person.

Sure, but this isn’t the Vancouver area. This is Dayton, Ohio. There’s fuckall to do downtown . The only industry here is military and military adjacent stuff (R&D, support services), plus an auto glass factory and DMAX. I really want to meet someone who lives in one of the big downtown condos like that, just so I can ask them why.

I may or may not  be finishing up a leasing project in a building that looks like this:

You can be mean, I didn’t design the building. Luckily it’ll be full in about a month and I can move on to the next project. This one has lasted far too long (thanks Covid!).

Eh, this is an hour outside of Vancity, but yeah, I get it.  Still, some people just want to live/survive and that’s hard here

7.2 acres facing a state park works for me. I can do whatever I want any hour of the day.

I grew up in a rural area, and the space and quiet we re great. Unfortunately, there wasn't much to do unless I drove an hour. The 'burbs are the Goldilocks zone for me. Close enough to the city to do all the fun stuff, far enough away the city problems stay in the city.

Yeah, ideally, I’d live the same distance out from the city as the burbs, but not live in the burbs. There’s plenty of land like that near me that hasn’t turned into subdivisions.
