Toyota is building a line of bespoke trucks for some lucky New Zealanders with the Toyota Hilux Mako. Not content to leave customization to aftermarket companies, the Mako makes use of Toyota’s formidable parts bin for this built-to-order model. Every Mako with come with ARB Old Man Emu bypass shocks with user-adjustable compression and rebound control. 18-inch Rhino wheels and bigger front discs with stainless steel-braided brake lines improve feel and stand up to heavy off-road abuse, while the interior comes with leather sports seats front and rear with color accents. LED lighting, fender flares, and skid plates are also included. Under the hood is the 2021 SR5 Cruiser’s 201 horsepower, 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine.

Not that I know anything about the two platforms are related but IMO, Toyota has missed out on further dominating the “mid-sized” truck market here in NA by not selling the Hi-Lux here. It’s so much better looking than the current Tacoma.

You keep buying the much more profitable and assembled in America Tacoma. And you don't have a free trade agreement with Thailand.

An interesting view given that this midlife refresh of the Hilux appearance was actually inspired by the Tacoma in the first place...

Interesting, I should have known that someone would have an actual answer to this question. T hey also make Hiluxes (Hiluxi?) in Australia and we do have a free trade agreement with them, so it seems like there’s a bit more to it than that.

Sorry, bloke....we don’t make Hilux or any other mass produced automobile here. All our mass market utes now come from Thailand, China, South Korea or India.
Toyota Oz does design, procure and supply three accessorised Hilux models like NZ’ s Mako using the Oz aftermarket and their supply lines . However, production of these models also is done by Toyota Thailand.
