Aussies are getting in on the action with their ability to generate huge amounts of solar. Hydrogen is a natural produce-and-store strategy.

This is the one form of transportation where electrification is easy though

These would be perfect for the routes still running Pacers; those things are garbage. An experience, mind you, but still garbage. They run through some beautiful rural/ remote areas where passenger traffic is very low, but they’re horrendous. They remind me of like a city bus on rails, they’re super rough, uncomfortable, and just have a diesel e ngine in a box to drive them down the track...

I’ve been looking into these for work; they’re interesting from a technical pov, but for the foreseeable future, they only make sense for two or three limited use cases :

Passenger multiple units on routes with no electrification and a cheap source of hydrogen;

L ast mile traction;

Auxiliary power generation.

They’re being pushed in the UK because they’ve got a decarbonisation goal and a history of mismanaged electrification projects. The (commercial) tests in Germany and France are mainly done from a PR and a political perspective, while in parallel most operators (plan to) buy battery EMUs instead .

But here in parts of the U.K. the line isn’t electrified as the amount they are used doesn’t warrant electrification.

Currently many of those sections are traversed with noisy old diesel units.

But there is a company who are recycling old London above ground stock, they are reusing 90-95% of the old carriage and placing powerful batteries under them. They'll be recharged at long stops or the end of the day, etc...

Easy enough if there are no awkward things like bridges and tunnels in the way. It's just a matter of lots of money and that's the issue. Some train operators are turning to battery electric trains which run under wires most of the time and while so doing charge a battery for use on unelectrified sections. Using batteries on an entirely unelectrified railway is another matter though which is where the hydrogen comes in.

Vivarail are actually using old underground stock. Thus far they've converted some of these from electric to diesel. Next step is I think hybrids which can use batteries for short unelectrified sections.

Sorry, yes, underground stock D78s.

They have done electric to diesel and looking at doing both battery only and hybrid diesel/battery.

They have been looked at to replace current diesel stock used off the ma inlines here in Cumbria.
