That headline is exactly why I held out for as long as I thought I could on getting a cell phone in the first place. 15 years later, and I still don’t like the idea of people being able to call and bother me whenever they want regardless of where I am.

That’s one scarily accurate prediction. Maybe the author was the mystery cell phone lady that walked past the camera in one of Charlie Chaplin’s films.

I actually resent that as well.
“Hey I called you earlier...”
“We were worried because you didn’t pick up...”
“Don’t you keep your phone on you?”
As a matter of fact, I do NOT keep my phone on me when I’m showering, sleeping, doing yardwork, going on walks, napping, doing home repairs -- and I also reserve the right to not pick up or reply indefinitely.

Then there’s that one friend who never learned how to text and likes to call and talk because he’s bored or needs to keep himself awake driving to the casino after working a late shift. No, I do not feel like babbling on about nothing for an hour on Thursday evening, learn to like coffee like the rest of us.

Sounds as it was a legit AP story. And Dick Tracy had th e capabi lity in 1946, so in 1953 the president and director was a little late to make the prediction.

My thought as well. The idea of a smart watch was around long before.
Also, history tends to be self-realizing. People grow up trying to make the cool ideas of their childhood turn into reality. It’s all connected. Cause and effect are not so much linear as a continuous endless loop.

I thought that converted reasonable conversation into hate speech? Oh wait, that’s YouTube comments.

Also, AT&T Bell Telephone launched car phone service in selected markets beginning in 1946, so some sort of commercially available
mobile telephony did exist by 1953, and I suppose someone in his position would be more aware than most of the possibility of the technology gradually becoming more compact over time, so that rather than fitting into a car trunk, it could one day fit into a trouser pocket. I mean, AT&T Bell Labs
also developed the first practical transistor in 1947, so the fact that miniaturization
of electronics was on the horizon was there to see for people who knew how to look.
