And then you see crap like this. Yeah, just laminate a picture of braille. It’s basically the same thing.

This is also just about the least disability friendly building on campus I’ve been in. 5 floors, no elevator, we don’t even have such luxuries as a water fountain or signs to mark what floor you’re on. I'm always getting off on the wrong floor . It’s somewhat infamous in all the worst ways.

I can imagine that whoever did that is probably proud of how thoughtful they are, too.

My favorite was a catholic school we were rehearsing at in NJ once that had all of their room labels above the door. They’d added Braille to be handicap friendly but I don’t think it did much for  the blind kids searching for “kindergarten.”

Haha, that’s pretty funny but it is more on whoever installed them than who made the actual sign. And most room number placards are barely within a kid’s reach anyways. Still. . .

These are just a crappy piece of laminated paper. Somehow one of the oldest dorms has had the least amount of total thought put into it. They could have at least labeled the stairs so I don’t have to count as I go up.

Professional sign guy here: I can tell you why this happens. This is meant to be a temporary sign, in place only to satisfy a fire marshal so the building can receive its TCO (temporary certificate of occupancy). Signage gets the short end of the stick from both the architects and the contractors. Someone let the signage slide until the last minute, called up the sign company (who has probably been sitting on un-approved drawings for the signs for months, waiting for the go-ahead to start fabricating), and the sign company scrambles to make temporary signs to fulfill their contract. They’re window dressing, basically.

They’re SUPPOSED to come back and replace those signs with the real thing (complete with raised letters and Braille), before the final CO is issued, but again, signage sometimes gets overlooked by the contractors. The sign company knows what they’re doing (probably), but a million things can go wrong that could lead to this. You have no idea how much red tape and how many pages of regulations and contracts are involved in that one little room number sign, and how many weird occurrences can screw up the process. And after all that, virtually no one checks the finished product...

I go through this exact scenario, day in and day out, and have for the last 22 years...

No one is proud this dorm exists. It’s basically so grandfathered in to the fire codes that any renovation efforts would make it economically unfeasible to keep standing. Which now that I think about it probably means asbestos too. Dang.

Figures. I doubt they’ll come back and correct that. This dorm has been the worst one on campus for most of its life and that’s not going to change anytime soon.

It doesn’t even have signs in the stairwell to let you know what floor you’re on, infuriatingly. Given it doesn’t have an elevator, you just have to count the floors as you go up. The building is so deeply grandfathered in to the fire codes that it would be better to just knock it down and start from scratch so the absolute minimum amount of effort is put into keeping it functional.

They even took our water fountains. Just took the whole unit off the wall and left it. If you don’t have a Brita, you don’t get to drink. This dorm is infamous for being pretty terrible in most ways.

As a graphics guy that is hilarious. I see all the access updates in places we work in for shows. Yeah it’s funny in a convention center when you have about 500 yards of nothing and then they put a tiny braille strip on something the size of my hand. I’m sure they will find it! Although in your case they do sometimes give us placement for things by printing it and then the braille comes later as another application.

I’ve often thought the same thing but in this case the braille strip isn’t even braille but just printed on.

Sorry I replied accidentally and then edited. I was going to say, in your case they do sometimes give us placement for things by printing it and then the braille comes later as another application. It’s a ADA thing. I had to work in a hospital once for the union, I am in the sign and display union as well. You can report it if that is not the case!

If you have some sort of disability, that’s a good enough reason to stay far away from this dorm. The building has had some somewhat recent repainting etc but it’s clearly well beyond the time frame these should have been replaced.

Supposedly in the next month or so we’re actually getting water fountains. That’ll be the day.

But with Trump in power maybe nobody will respond?

Assuming the wall was repainted and the sign put up at the same time, based on evidence such as quantity of scuffing and the condition of the relatively new looking plastic baseboard material that matches the new colors, I’d put it at having been up for around a year if not more. That’s simply not acceptable . Detective work is fun!
