My constant FB Marketplace trolling paid off big time yesterday. A local business is moving to a bigger shop, and posted a bunch of free barn wood scraps that needed to be gone by the end of day today . I caught the ad 13 minutes after it was posted, it was in the next town over, and I was done teaching for the day. How lucky is that! ?!
We exchanged a couple of messages, and I told him I would be there in 20 minutes. I got there in 15, and loaded up an entire truckload of beautiful stuff. I brought that to school, then went back and got another truckload. Today I’m going back for more.
Look at that patina!
I am totally geeked up about this stuff!

What a steal! I always thought wood working would be one of my cheaper hobbies (after tools anyway)...WRONG wood is motherflippin expensive!

There were no pieces big enough for your beams. It’s all small stuff. The widest of the long boards is like 4-1/2". Some of the shorties are wider. Most of the boards are 2-3" or narrower. We’ll make signs and picture frames at school. Some of this will end up in my basement as well.

on my last trip to the lumber yard while I was waiting for my order I was looking at some of the exotic woods. The grains are amazing and so were the prices, holy crap $$$$$$$$$$$

Yea my first trip to an actual lumber yard was a real eye opener. I didn’t even buy anything thinking, I’m not talented enough to use wood this nice.

“I’m not talented enough to use wood this nice.”
I know that feeling, and I’ve been doing this for a long time. Still, I’m not worthy of some of that stuff.

Our conference room table at work is tiger maple and 40 x 16... the wood is beautiful but the table is ugly. We bought it used and it was still more than most of the cars I’ve owned.

I always start with crappy wood and if I like my creation I’ll go for it a second time with nice wood the more expensive boards from home depot. If I don’t like it, it’s firewood. Recently I have been making little planters for succulents out of the scraps.
I make a lot of mistakes measuring and or cutting.

I work for an LBM company, and we have a mill that creates custom millwork. In 2018 I had to conduct some training classes at the mill, and while there the GM took us around for a tour. At one point, he offered us free access to a rack that was sitting in the middle of the mill, full of poplar, oak ....pieces that had been pulled out during production runs for imperfections, but were still sizable pieces that appeared usable. “We’re not going to use those...feel free to take some.”
I told him I felt bad taking any of the pieces, as it felt like taking their inventory. He said it was already accounted for, and if we didn’t take it it was going into a scrap wagon that would be burnt up.
I nabbed about 8 really nice pieces of 1x6 and 1x8. It’s been sitting in my garage since...I don’t know what I’m going to do with it. Whatever it is, it’ll be cool though...

Nice!
They guy told me their money making projects require big stuff, and there are only so many picture frames and whatnot they can make. I’ve got another truck load, and a 5x8 U- haul trailer full right now to unload.
