Kinja'd!!!

First chip I’ve gotten in 25 years of driving. It’s pretty localized, and I’m planning on getting one of the pros out to fix it before it gets any worse... anyone have any recommendations, specifically in the Austin area?

Also, let me just reiterate: fuck I-35.

No recommendations on who to do it, but there’s a decent chance your insurance does free repairs, so you might look into that, and see who they want you to use.

Lol, we had three chips repaired within the first year we owned our new Pacifica. By the time I put 30-40k miles on my cars the windshield looks like it’s been sandblasted. Michigan roads are tough on glass.

As long as a pro fixes it, you should be fine.  Those diy kits don’t even come close.  Just go to your local glass shop, or check with your dealership to see who they use.

I got a chip almost identical to that on my WRX maybe 2 months into my ownership. Got it fixed with some epoxy by Speedy Glass (Safelite in the US, iirc) and it’s been good for the subsequent 3 years so far. It’s barely perceptible as well; you can only see it if you’re really looking. I think it was $100 cash (a bit more + tax if paid otherwise, the owner was pretty cool).

I should look into that. I drove behind a dump truck, once. The glass can be fixed, but I don’ t think the paint can without major effort.

One thing to NOT do, is put the defroster on hot and leave it on. That’ll make it crack right across the windshield. Done that a few times.

If you’re paying out of pocket avoid the places that advertise a lot and primarily do the “free” repairs under insurance : they’ll charge twice the price as what it should actually cost because nobody cares when insurance is paying.

If you’re going to seal it, just buy a 3m kit and do it yourself. It’s stupid simple and there isn’t really a trick to it. Takes five minutes.

I had a similar chip repaired by Safelite on my car, they said they could do the repair or replace the windshield, same cost (to me, windshield would go through insurance, repair would be cash).  I chose the repair, it look s much better, but I can still see it, right in the center of the windshield, I wish I had just had the windshield replaced.

Mostly I’m concerned about it going from nearly 80 this afternoon, to 30s tonight, to nearly 80 again tomorrow. It’ll be garaged tonight, but in direct sun all day tomorrow and beyond.

Man, my first 10 years of driving were in Ohio and MI, never had a chip. And I drove way more then.

From my experience, the cold and hot temperature difference on either side of the crack, and both layers of glass. The chip may be only on the outside layer.

Also use extreme   caution if you are running your finger against the interior glass as it could get cut.

Safelite makes most of the glass they install and they get some wonky reviews on quality. Best to ask them to upgrade to the OEM which is probably P inkleton or PPG. Price difference  is almost negligible .
