Do you refer to that style of cheese as,”american cheese"?

No.
It’s just processed cheese. No more or less than Babybell, Cheese Strings and many others.
There is cheese, processed cheese, cheese spreads, etc...
I’ve used cheddar, emmental, gouda, mozzarella, manchego, gruyere, etc... But sometimes for a burger, a processed cheese slice is just right.
Just this side of the pond draws the line at liquid cheese from a squeezy bottle or squirted from a pressurised canister.

Ya know some of my favorite burgers have been from places not in the US. Surprising to me as I figured that’d be something American places had an edge on. Just had an excellent burger in Utrecht, Netherlands the other day. I think it was the really good fresh bread that made it so perfect. Kinda pricey at about €18 with fries at a counter serve place but I’ve paid more for a worse burger in American cities.

Some ex-pats from the U.S. have remarked on the U.K. and E.U. food tasting different and going off sooner remarking on, ‘what goes into U.S. food to keep it fresh for longer’.
General consensus is fruit and veg has more flavour and less chemical taste , the bread has less preservatives and the meat is more flavourful because of lack of growth hormones to bulk the animal.
There is a place near me that does a great burger and is my now go to if I'm in town.
