That waving people at a stop sign one is too real.

I love that first one... I canNOT understand what’s wrong with people here in Cali— “Yield to THE CAR ON THE RIGHT!”
What’s so freakin’ hard about that??

Where I’m from it’s the first car that stops, gets to go. Maybe it’s people from out of the area?

I’ve gotten so fed up with the people who wave you through when you have the right of way I’ve taken to shaking my head and emphatically waving them through once, if they insist on letting me go after that I honk and flash the brights. People must think I’m insane

It’s when the two cars arrive AT THE SAME TIME. Universal rule in the US is that the “car to the right” has the right away...
except here in Cali where it turns into a passive-aggressive showdown. I’ve lived-and-driven at least 5 years in five different time- zones and have never seen anything like SoCal’s chaos at a 4-way stop.

They never taught us that rule in driver’s ed (MI). I found out about it YEARS later, and still struggle sometimes “wait, was it yield to the car on t he right , or the car on t he right must yield ?”

It makes perfect sense if you think about it - since we drive on the right, the car on the right gets the right of way because as soon as they enter the intersection
, the other car can start creeping into the intersection and can move through more quickly (counting the time it takes both cars to get through)
. If the car on the left goes first, it’s blocking the other car’s movement until it’s completely clear of the intersection.

As frustrating as it is, I’ve found it’s just best to move through quickly as soon as I get the wave. Still super annoying. Only time I appreciate it is when it’s a big, slow truck (trash/cement/semi).

Agreed, that’s one of the few times that I’ll just go.

I wonder if they really intended for right-of-way to be efficient like that, or if it’s just a happy accident.

It seems just kind of logical to me. Think of it as two people walking on two trails that cross instead - if the person on the right goes ahead
, both can just keep walking, almost
unimpeded, but
if the person on the left goes, the one on the right has to stop to let them pass.
