That is a very good setup. Would last most people 4-5 years without needing upgrades. And if they really wanted to get extra, they could just move it to another decent case for around $50.

It might even be overkill. I have an i3-8100 with half the RAM and I never even come close to stressing those.

Nice work! The i7 6700 non-SFF ones seem pretty dear, all I see are $800+. Seems like you’d have to score a pretty nice deal to beat scratch-built.

Seems like a solid setup

Moving the case is pointless since in here it's pretty much maxed out

It actually was $200 shipped for i7 6700 8GB in an SFF case... And I bought a borked P300 tower for 80.. Swapped the internals and got them to both work great

yea too bad these are the last gens of prebuilts where you can do stuff like this before they went all small cases that aren’t long enough or deep enough to fit bigger GPUs

That’s a ni ce setup !
On another note, t he Supermicro is still running great. I upgraded from 12GB to 24GB of RAM, but everything else is basically the same. I need to make the jump to Windows 10 yet, and I’m planning on picking up a new 500GB Samsung 860 EVO for a main drive and starting fresh. I also should give the internals a good cleaning. Maybe redo the thermal paste on the cpu heatsink... and while I have the heatsink off, maybe try and score a cheap cpu upgrade...
I can’t seem to leave well enough alone on this system ...

For 99% of folks it is overkill. It’s also sweet and given the sourcing likely cheaper to build than one might think.. (my current PC I think is an early i5 with less ram and an old case.. basically functional dumpster salvage)
