Empty mall is empty

Went to Belk for the first time and it was... fine. Like Marshall’s but they got all their stuff from Dillard’ s instead of... Goodwill. The lady working was SUPER friendly, very chatty but not very helpful. I forgot to buy something but decided to not to go back because I didn’t want to talk to get trapped in another conversation .

Went to Best Buy. Still don’t understand the point of them. It is like they looked at Radioshack and thought “They would have been perfect if they were just a bit more like Walgreen s .” They didn’t have any laptop bags I wanted and their video game section seemed to have shrunk in favor of washing machines. (Because I know when I want to buy an appliance my first thought is absolutely Best Buy and not Home Depot, Lowes, and specialty stores.......)

Tried to find a new laptop backpack after mine long suffering one finally lost some teeth off a zipper. Found the updated model of mine is it is soooooo much worse. Thinner fabrics, smaller zippers, shittier pockets. Sadness.

Went to Promenade. It is a shit mess. In Dillard’s the employees well outnumbered the shoppers. Found some sweaters I liked, but the cheapest one ON SALE was $60. One I really wanted was $160. For a sweater. Went to Penny’s and bought three for $50.

Picked up the Volvo. The Jag has ruined me. Volvo feels slow, but nice to row my own for a change.

On the bright side. I parked next to this. Honestly surprised to like the Disco more.  The G-Wagen looked more like a bedazzled Wrangler.

I’m guessing there are regional differences, but around here if I want to see electronics in person before inevitably buying them off Amazon... Best B uy is the place . And they seem to be copying Apple and Microsoft, in that the employees are seem to actually know what they’re selling and the stores are all big and modern.

Is RadioShack still a thing? I’m sitting at a Walgreens right now, and... I just don’t understand them. It’s like a pharmacy decided to also sell a small selection of super overpriced groceries and somehow that became “a thing”.

What is Belk?

What is Dillard’s?

What is promenade?

Is Marshall’s still around? They always seem perpetually going out of business, kind of like Kohl’s and Burlington Coat Factory.

Speaking of going out of business...

Penny's? They're still around? Did they drop the JC? Can we bring back Bon Marche, or however it's spelled?

(I really don’t want to go back to work)

My thoughts prompted by your thoughts:

Best Buy is loud and obnoxious, but they do function as a physical showroom for any electronics you need to see before you buy or a place to pick up a cord or printer cartridges really fast. I’ll bet they stay in business because or their online store. We bought our Bosch dish washer from them because they came out to be the best deal online (still hard to buy appliances completely without physical stores).

When my zipper broke on my favorite briefcase, I spent the $ to get a new one put in my my local cobbler/seamstress. Obviously the item has to be worth it, but my briefcase is a companion I’d hate to lose after all this time.

I do most of my regular shopping at JC Penny as the best balance of selection, quality, and price. I do like a lot of the stuff I see at Dillard’s, but I’m not paying $85 for a shirt. What I do is go to their clearance racks twice a year. In February-March , I go for my winter stuff. In Octo ber-December I get my summer stuff.  Then, that $85 shirt is $15.

I'll absolutely buy an appliance from Best buy (again), as their geek squad coverage is fantastic and their prices are in line with home Depot and Lowe's.

Yes that is apparent haha.

I also hadn’t heard of Belk before and couldn’t tell you what they are. Must be some sort of regional chain.

Dillard’s is like... Macy’s but only in the south?

Promenade is a mall that is slowly marching towards death but happens to be near my storage unit . Forgot to provide context as I copied this rant from our road trip Slack.

I drove past a Marshall’s today so.... I assume they’re still in business? I haven’t been into one since college.

Yes Pe nny’s is still around and no they did not drop the JC.

We never had “the Bon” but I remember my mom speaking fondly of it. Did they close?

I did notice the last couple things I bought from them were priced identically to Amazon, which is neat.

Belk is like Macy’s, but more middle of the road. Dillard’s is like Belk, but more upscale (in appearances and price only). Promenade? Never heard of it. Penny’s? JC, is that you?

-Best Buy started carrying appliances as a floor space replacement for the dwindling sales of physical media (CDs, DVDs, etc.) Last time I went in there was to pick up a video game pre-order, simply because I got a Best Buy credit card a few years ago and I like to use it every once in awhile so it doesn’t lapse.

-Belk is a North Carolina-based department store. Dillard’s is...well I’m not sure where they’re from, but they used to be fairly common here in VA as well. My local mall had a Belk that became a Dillard’s, but it closed a few years ago and the space is now divided up into several different smaller stores (Dick’s, Five Below, and a couple restaurants IIRC, and still partially vacant).  I don’t think there are any Belks in the Richmond area anymore.

If I had to do it again, I’d buy another eBags Professional Slim. I replaced my stolen bag with the eBags Flight, but I’ve found I prefer the organization in the slim model .

It’s inevitable..... soon it will just be pharmacy/convenience stores, Wal-Mart, and Amazon.

Bon Marché totally went to hell after Macy’s bought them. Was a nice store, became kinda meh. They took over Foley’s down here, too, and the closest one to Mom went out of business. Welp.

The only thing I have to add to this conversation is that I really like the laptop backpacks from Costco.

When best buy first expanded near me they quickly took over officemax and had decent computer equipment, and used to send out $5 coupons that I’d use to buy movies. Two things that really bugged me was A) only stocking their inhouse brands, which in a fwe instances were subpar . B) more employees that don’t know wtf they’re talking about. I’ve had good experience with the geeksquad, but some of the floor employees....
