The daughter scout’s car came in second overall. A good run. Ended up .02 seconds behind the winning car. For the minimal amount of time we spent on it that’s pretty good.

Not a bad showing at all, nearly a tie.
That was always the one Cub event I really didn’t mind losing a weekend for when I worked for them , the overnight ones sucked though.

These are all about friction, the speeds are not enough for aero to come into play.

Weights should bring the car to the legal limit.
Mounting weights high and toward the rear helps keep cg high to allow just a bit more potential energy stored and turned into speed on track.
Only 3 wheels need to roll on the track. The 4th is best used to get it to follow the track.
If they allow powdered graphite on the axles, use it.
Make sure your axles are smooth. I found a bit of 00 steel wool takes out minor imperfections well.
I never tried skeletonized wheels, but I imagine they could help by decreasing rotational inertia. That would have a bit of risk on wheel strength though.

If they allow wheel modifications, re-profile them a bit to minimize the amount of surface touching the track. Also, make sure they are aligned so the car rolls straight!

Most districts rules now mandate that all 4 wheels touch, so be careful there. Clean up the axles, hit them with graphite, make sure there is about 2 business cards gap between the inside flange of the wheel and the car body and don’t paint the car body where the inside flange of the wheel may rub. We lightly sand those and hit them with graphite as well. Get the weight as close to the max as possible.
