We took the 2020 Subaru Ascent into the Cascade Mountains to test XMode with Winter Tires.

Lemme guess, before even watching it...
AWD and Snow Tires is GOOD.
Who would’ve guessed that?

Often when driving my outback (with snow tires) I wonder why everyone is going so slow when there is ice and snow on the road. The car is just so darn solid and planted to the ground. One thing I’ve noticed is that even with TC turned off the Outback won’t let you go full rally driver, it’s still there but more like 25% traction control than 100% traction control.

Stop pushing me towards buying a Subaru. Hopefully going to test drive an Outback in two weeks.

I put new snows on our Volvo this year and it’s pretty fantastic. And the same is true of my traction control, I have to get pretty aggressive to get it sideways. It does respond well to a Scandi flick maneuver though. Go figure.

I tried hard to toss the outback side ways and the TC kicked in pretty hard, that was after I pushed the button to turn it off. Oh well.

If I am timid about it, the Volvo gets upset even with TC off. But if I do something more dramatic, it’s almost like it doesn’t know what to do, and/or just can’t compensate for the fully-committed move. It’s hard to get sideways unless I use some variation of a pendulum move.

I was in 2nd gear and tried a scandi flick and it kicked in. It should have resulted in a nice 4 wheel drift with tires spinning forwards.

Should have bought a Scandinavian car, obviously. I bet there’s a way to defeat that, for when you really want to have fun.
Even in my E46 which had a pretty passive TC with a quick button press - I could throttle steer that car all over the place - in order to get full freedom there was one fuse I could pull, but it disabled ABS too. Good for rallycross-type driving, not so much on the street.

Until the snow is so deep ur front tires come off the ground and you stop. Then you jack up each side, shovel it out, and back up. Then you put he WRX back in the garage and drive an Outback (3.0R amd3.6R, both with VTD) for the winter.

i did that with my old Explorer Sport Trac. I think that is how I ended up with a bent driveshaft.
